TUTORIAL 1

1. Assuming the validity of Raoult’s law, do the following calculations for

benzene(1)/toluene(2) system.
a) At temperature = 100oC (373.15 K) and liquid phase composition of benzene = 0.33,
determine the pressure and vapor phase compositions.
b) At temperature = 100oC (373.15 K) and vapor phase composition of toluene = 0.67,
determine the pressure and liquid phase compositions.
c) At pressure = 120 kPa and liquid phase composition of benzene = 0.33, determine
the temperature and vapor phase compositions.
d) At pressure = 120 kPa and vapor phase composition of toluene = 0.67, determine
the temperature and liquid phase compositions.

2. Assuming Raoult’s law to be valid, prepare a P-x-y diagram for a temperature of 90oC
(363.15K) and a T-x-y diagram for a pressure of 90 kPa for benzene(1)/ethylbenzene(2)
system.
