Title : The Perception of European Tourists toward the Using of Pidgin Balinese-English by
Local People in Munduk Village-Bali

ABSTRACT

Tourism has indeed long intrigued scholars due to its distinctive features and multiplier
effects toward many sectors, inevitably in Bali as one of the prominent contributor for tourism
development in Indonesia. Unfortunately, some tourist attractions are unattractive and not
originally-Bali as it was, since many negative impacts were neglected. Therefore, some regions
start to embark in tourism by performing Community-based Tourism or Ecotourism reflecting on
sustainable tourism which maintains the nuance still pristine. Munduk village is the exemplary
case of this thesis, with its concept of rural tourism. However, as Munduk is still on
‘involvement stage’ of destination life cycle, it is vulnerable for its progress, especially in case of
language or how local people communicate to the tourists. Moreover, mostly local people speak
English with grammatical error. Therefore, it is necessary to delve into this perspective of
tourism, focusing on the perception of using pidgin Balinese-English. Hence, this thesis aims at
analyzing the perception of European tourists, the impacts on the service level and the
anticipation for this issue.
There were mainly two types of spoken data, from interviewing the experts through
purposive sampling and distributing the questionnaires to the European tourists through the
accidental sampling. European had been chosen based on the qualitative observation that most
tourists are from Europe. The collected data was analyzed by using Descriptive Qualitative
Method, while also applied some theories, for instance, theory of perception, perception index on
Likert scale, and theory of service quality. Besides, the advices and suggestions were also
compiled as a recommendation to improve the tourism quality in Munduk.
The analysis reveals the fact that the European tourists had bad impression of the lack
skill of local people in speaking English. They felt dissatisfied that the communication was not
able to run accordingly, since sometimes they did not get the desirable answers. This could build
the gap to transfer the information, whether about culture or nature, which will also lead to less
interest in the future. This issue is even necessary to take much effort as the local people itself
felt reluctant to learn English grammatically correct.
To conclude, negative perception could also impact negative image on its service level.
Thus, this thesis also offered several suggestions to overcome this issue, for instance, conducting
free English course and producing certain brochure which cover the general elaboration about
nature and culture. Eventually, Munduk can hopefully serve the best quality for tourism while
improving its human resources quality.
