SINGLE DRUM DRYERS WITH APPLICATOR ROLLS Drum Dryer
The drum dryer with applicator rolls has been specially developed for the dehydration of

Cereal/Starch/Fruit mixes.

The product is fed into the valley between the first applicator roll and either a contra-rotating roll
or a plate. The product is drawn between the nip of the main roll and the first applicator roll thus
applying a film to the main drying roll.

Excess product is removed from the first applicator roll by means of a scraper creating a further
'sausage' of material between the first and second applicator rolls. This again is drawn into the nip of the
main roll and the second applicator roll, further increasing the thickness on the main drum, the whole
process being repeated with further applicator rolls. Moisture is evaporated from the Benefits

DOUBLE DRUM DRYERS Drum Dryer
The oldest design of drum dryer is still widely used throughout the food and Technology
chemical industries, due to its simplicity and ease of use. Double drum dryers
are ideal for drying free-flowing liquid products, such as milk or spent
brewers yeast.

The material to be dried is delivered into the nip formed between two
drying drums. The thickness of the product film may be varied by adjustment
of the gap between the drying drums or cylinders. Moisture is evaporated from

When using a double drum dryer, it is normally advantageous

to concentrate the feed liquid using a filter press, centrifuge or 2
evaporator, in order to reduce the initial water content.

Concentrating the liquid in this manner means that smaller dryers

are needed as there is less water to evaporate and the energy
savings are greater.

CONSTRUCTION
Drum
The most critical part of the dryer is the drum, constructed
in cast iron and designed to accommodate high steam
temperatures and pressures, precision machined to provide
even heat transfer and reproducible performance over
throughout its life. For those materials which may not come
into contact with cast iron the drum may be hard chrome
plated or, for more arduous conditions, chrome plated
over nickel.

The drum rotates in grease or oil lubricated heavy duty roller

Safety Gear
To minimise mechanical damage to the surface of the dryer
drums, applicator rolls are mounted in spring loaded bearing
slide assemblies designed to allow the rolls to lift in the event
of a foreign body passing between the roll nips and dryer
drum and return to their original position. In cases of twin
cylinder dryers, one drum is fixed in position, the other is
spring loaded to give the same degree of protection.
Damplates

the dryer drum or drums.
Feed Systems
Materials can be fed to the dryer by a variety of means
ranging from a simple feed pipe for double drum dryers to
fully traversing feed mechanisms with single or multi
feed pipes.
Knives
Product is removed from the dryer drum by means of an alloy
assembly. The knife is applied to the surface of the drum by
pneumatic cylinders located at each end of the dryer. For
improved knife life and reduced drum maintenance an
oscillating knife system may be fitted with either conventional
or disposable knives.
Conveyors
After removal from the drum the product
is collected by a transverse screw conveyor
specially designed to break up the product film or
flakes into easy-to-handle particles. For products that may
require cooling after removal from the drum, e.g. those with
high sugar contents, air knives and film take-off rollers
are fitted.
Vapour Extraction
Dryers for food applications are generally provided with
vapour canopies and extract systems to remove the vapours
from the operating area. Dryers for hazardous materials may
be provided with complete dust and fume tight enclosures.
Drives
The drive is provided by means of geared motor drive units,
mounted directly onto the dryer drum shafts. For double or
twin cylinder drum dryers, the drives are synchronised and
drum speed is adjustable through a single frequency inverter.
In the case of drum dryers with multiple applicator rolls, each
applicator roll is individually rotated by a shaft mounted
geared motor unit, again synchronised and
adjustable through a single inverter.
