Collaborative Unit on Digital Citizenship

FRIT 7739
Spring 2018
Identification of Learning Problem
Birmingham Falls Elementary School is located north of Atlanta in the city of Milton,
Georgia. Students at this school struggle to find the correct answers to their questions when
searching the internet. As a third grade teacher, I have noticed that my students spend an
outrageous amount of time searching the internet for facts and information on a given topic. I
chose to collaborate with Carrie Hilliard, our school METI, since she has taught students lessons
on digital citizenship. The goal of this lesson is to help students increase the accuracy of their
searches by using keywords.
Learner Analysis
The target audience for instruction is my third grade homeroom class at Birmingham
Falls Elementary. There are 24 students, 9 boys and 15 girls. Eleven students have been
identified as gifted and participate in the TAG program. None of the students have a 504 or IEP
plan. Students have access to laptops and desktop computers in the classroom daily. They also
have a computer lab rotation for specials twice a month and they may check out additional
technology devices from the media center.

The Subject Matter Experts will be myself, Jenna Jenkins, and our school METI, Carrie
Hilliard. Ms. Hilliard taught Digital Citizenship lessons to our students so she knows them and
their background knowledge on the topic. We are working together to design, develop, and
present this lesson.
Instructional Objectives
Objective 1: Students will be able to increase the accuracy of their keyword searches by using
multiple words, synonyms, quotation marks, and alternative words and phrases.

Objective 2: Students will be able to identify the correct keywords for given topics.

Assessments
Students will complete a variety of assessments throughout the course. First, they will
complete an introductory survey to provide data on their experience with internet searching.
During the lesson, students will demonstrate their knowledge by identifying keywords for given
topics through the game “Play Shark”. Next, they will complete an assessment that asks
questions directly related to the videos and information found on the course website as well as
provide feedback about the course. Finally, students will have the option to create a digital
poster, PowerPoint, or Flipgrid video providing tips on how to increase accuracy of internet
searches. Students will be assessed using the quiz and performance task.
Instructional Design Summary
This lesson will be taught mostly online through the Smore website, however the
introduction and guided practice will be taught face-to-face in the Media Center. Students will
have the option to use desktop computers or IPads to complete the course. To activate prior
knowledge, students will share their experiences with searching the internet and discuss issues
they have encountered. They will also brainstorm the meaning and purpose of keywords and list
search engines they have used. After the face-to-face portion, students will work through the
course at their own pace. Students that have experience with searching the internet will advance
through the game more quickly while others may require additional support from the teacher.
There are two objectives for this course. Objective 1: Students will be able to increase the
accuracy of their keyword searches by using multiple words, synonyms, quotation marks, and
alternative words and phrases. Objective 2: Students will be able to identify the correct keywords
for given topics. Content will be delivered to all learners through the Smore website
https://www.smore.com/c4bvr. Students will have access to the website and resources during and
after instruction.
The Universal Design for Learning approach will be incorporated throughout the course.
Students are presented information in a variety of ways: videos, notes, website resources with
pictures, and a poster. The teacher links new concepts to background knowledge so students can
build on what they know. Students are able to practice newly learned skills through the partner
keyword search activity and the “Play Shark” game. They will also complete a performance task
and an assessment at the end of the course in which they will receive immediate feedback.
I. Representation: The course will be presented online using a variety of videos, posters,
activities, and games.
II. Expression: Students have the option of completing the course using desktop
computers or IPads and they will work at their own pace.
III. Engagement: Students will choose a Web 2.0 tool to create a digital poster,
PowerPoint, or Flipgrid video providing tips on how to increase accuracy of internet
searches.
Formative Evaluation Plan
Students will complete an assessment identifying the correct keywords for given
searches, provide feedback on what they like about the lesson, and if they think it prepared them
to conduct research more efficiently. I will use this information to make any necessary changes
to the lesson and to guide future instruction.
