ASSIGNMENT 2

(PO2, CO1, C3, C6)

1. The flow pattern during evaporation in horizontal tube is as below. In regard to

the cross-sectional views of the flow structure, identify the name of flow regime at
each section (1-5). ( X is the mole fraction of steam)

2. The Pressure drop in two-phase flow is a major design variable, governing the
pumping power required to transport two-phase fluids and also governing the
recirculation rate in natural circulation system. In a pipeline with 0.03 m radius,
2 m long and 0.01mm roughness steam and water with mass flow rate of 0.04
and 1.4 kg/s enter. Process condition is assumed adiabatic and the average
temperature and pressure for the whole pipeline is considered 300K and
100kN/m2.

i) Identify the regime type of each phase

ii) Determine the pressure drop of each phase (water and steam)

R = 8306 N.m/kgmol.K
At 300K and 100kN/m2: µ (steam) = 0.015 x 10-3 N.s/m2 ,
µ (water) = 0.6 x 10-3 N.s/m2
