Teaching Episode/ Lesson Plan #2

Music in Special Ed

Musical Concept: Singing and playing melodic instrument (xylophone) at same time

Learning Objective: Student will learn to sing and play “Michael, Row the Boat Ashore.”
Students will read sheet music to play on xylophone and sing at the same time.

Materials Needed: Xylophone and sheet music.

Procedures:
1. Students will learn song by rote (isolate and refine as necessary).
2. Students will read sheet music for “Michael, Row the Boat Ashore,” and play on their
xylophone (isolate and refine as necessary).
3. Students will combine xylophone playing and sining of “Michael, Row the Boat
Ashore” (isolate and refine as necessary).

Adaption (Student with Dyslexia): Separate sheet music will be provided as an

accommodation. With this sheet music, each pitch of the sheet music will be separately
labeled with the pitch name and a correlating color (see below). With this, there are
several visual cues that will help a student with dyslexia interpret and read the sheet
music.
