Procedure:
Hook:
Include: ● The teacher will begin the lesson with a review of their last topic; the
Voyager Space Mission. The teacher will reflect on how many students felt
Key academic small and slightly insignificant compared to the large scale of our solar
language system. She will inform them that our solar system is in fact quite small
compared to the “vast cosmic arena” that is our universe (Sagan, 1994).

Cognitive Expanding Universe Demo:*

engagement & ● The teacher will demonstrate how the universe is expanding using a balloon
formative/ model (visual). The teacher will ask the students to write down their
formal observations as she blows air into the balloon.*
assessment(s)
Rumors Strategy:*
● The students will use the “Rumors” strategy to walk around the room and
Possible share their observations with three other classmates. Each time they share
adjustments an observation they will swap cards. After swapping cards 3 times they will
based on return to their seats.*
formative
assessment ● The teacher will ask for volunteers to share what is written on the card they
ended up with.*

Key transitions Scale of Universe Demo:

● The teacher will show the students a brief scale of the universe using an
online simulation (visual).
Any grouping
Vocabulary Graphic Organizer :
● The teacher will hand out vocabulary sheets with words, definitions and
Differentiated photographs of applicable vocabulary. Directions for their first activity will
Instruction also be included on the vocabulary handout (Key Academic Language –
Introduced).

● The teacher will explain and model the Microsoft Word Graphic Organizer on
the projector. Explanation will include that the students need to make 4
shapes and label each shape a different category; 1 - Earth & Moon, 2 –Sun
& Heliosphere, 3 – Milky Way Galaxy, 4 – Universe. Within each shape,
students will add textboxes of the vocabulary. The vocabulary words must
be properly placed in the correct category (Cognitive Student Engagement)
(Formative Formal Assessment) (Key Academic Language – Practiced).

● The teacher will ask two students to repeat the directions (CFU – directions).

website.

● The students will be directed to the Resources page and will be asked to

pass out a glow in the dark star, planet or galaxy to each student. One by
one students will be asked to stick (with tape or sticky-tac) their glow in the
dark celestial object in the correct category. Once each student has
completed their task, the teacher will turn off the light so the students can
see the glowing items displayed in cosmic scale.*

● The teacher will ask two students to repeat the directions (CFU –
directions).*

Homework The teacher will announce further resources listed on her page for students to view if
and/or they would like to learn more about the scale of the universe.
