Introduction:
Welcome to Mechanical Engineering with the Girls in Engineering Academy by the Engineering Society of
Detroit! My name is Tracey Nguyen and I will be the mechanical engineering instructor for the class of summer
2018. I am a new mechanical engineering graduate from Michigan State University and I look forward to the
next four weeks of teaching such a great and useful topic!
Class Content:
In this class, we will be learning about topics related to mechanical engineering which will include various
concepts of physics. Parents, if you are interested in the course topics and activities the girls are learning, check
out the class website! I will post a new blog after every class day.

Gravity Velocity & Speed
Force Acceleration
Energy (Potential & Kinetic) Friction
Work Inertia & Momentum

Class Structure:
1. Discussion on previous lesson (Q&A or mini-quiz) 10 min
2. Interactive PowerPoint lecture 20 min
3. Guided activity 20 min
4. Discussion on correlation between lecture with the class activity 10 min

Couse Goals for Students:


 Basic understanding of physics
 Able to differentiate between mass and weight

 Understand relationships between position, velocity, and acceleration
 Apply class lecture concepts to build and create a roller coaster
 Complete lectures in 2.5 weeks
 Complete K’nex roller coaster in 1.5 weeks
