KINDER 2 OPEN-HOUSE ACTIVITY

TOPIC: Using the Clock, Telling Time

SKILLS: Know the parts and function of the clock

Know the time of the day
Tell time by hour and half hour

MATERIALS: Story book, wooden or wind-up analogue clock)

MOTIVATION: (30 mins)

-Show a wooden clock (or any big analogue clock) to the class
-ask what is it, what is it for, how to use it (Expected answer: It is a clock. It
tells the time.)
-ask why time is important? why we should know the time?
-ask them to take note of the time while teacher is reading the storybook.

-Read story book: “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle

-Motivate schema and vocabulary
(Ex: What is a ladybug? How does it look like? What does it eat? What does
“grouchy” means?)
-Read the story to the children, indicating the exact time the ladybug meets
each animal.
-Wind the clock and show the exact time each animal appears. (or draw the
time on the board, if possible)

-Discuss the importance of and the lessons learned from the story.
(Ex: sharing, being friendly, do not pick fights, not being “grouchy”, telling
time, knowing the time of the day (morning, lunchtime, afternoon, evening)

PRESENTATION: (30-45 mins)

-Show the clock again to the class
Review:
-What is it, what is it for, how to use it
(Expected answer: It is a clock. It tells the time.)
-Why time is important? Why should we know the time?
(Expected answer: To know when to do things, like eat breakfast, lunch or
dinner, when to wake up or go to school or go home , when to stop doing
things, etc.)

-Ask the children to describe the clock. Let them observe the clock and use
as many adjectives as possible (Ex: It is round, it has 2 or 3 “hands”, the
hands are turning/moving to the right, it has numbers 1-12, it makes ticking
sound, etc. )

-Identify the parts of the clock (face, numbers, hour hand, minute hand and
seconds hand (if there is any) and how the hands and numbers work to tell
the time
-Explain how the hands of the clock moves all throughout the day, there are
24 hours a day and the hands goes around twice to make one day. ( Because
there are only 12 numbers on the face of the clock)

Telling Time by the Hour

-Present telling time by the hour, where the small hand and big hands should
be.
(Ex: 9:00 or 9 o’clock: short hand points to 9 and big hand point to 12)
-Indicate that o’clock or _:00 means the big hand is pointing to 12.
-Show how to write the time in digital and word form correctly
-Write the digital and word form (9:00 and 9 o’clock)
-Give as many examples then test the children by doing drills

Telling Time by Half Hour

-Present telling time by half hour the same way, as o’clock
(Ex: 9:30 or half past nine: short hand points to 9 and big hand point to 6)
-Indicate that thirty or half or _:30 means the big hand is pointing to 6.
-Write the digital and word form (9:30 and nine thirty/ half past nine)
-Give as many examples then test the children by doing drills on the board

SIT-DOWN ACTIVITY (15 mins)

-Do worksheets on telling time by the hour and half hour

FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY (Day 2)

TOPIC: Using the Clock, Telling Time

SKILLS: Know the parts and function of the clock

Know the time of the day
Tell time by minutes

MATERIALS: Wooden or wind-up analogue clock

A piece of cartolina, markers
Flash cards (time)
Art Materials for making clock (paper plate, crayons, markers,
cardboard,
round fastener)

REVIEW: Parts and functions of the clock

(small hand shows the hour and big hand shows the minute)
Telling time by hour (o’clock) and half hour (half past or thirty)

PRESENTATION: (30 mins)

Telling Time by the Minutes

-Review skip counting by 5, route-count by intervals of 5
-Ask the children to write the numbers on the board or piece of cartolina so it
can be posted in the room.
-Present how to tell time by the minutes using the big hand
-Each number starting with 1 is read by intervals of 5.
-One whole rotation of the big hand makes 60 minutes in all
-Remind them though that 12 is read as o’clock or -:00 and 6 as thirty or _:30
-Show how it is done
(Ex: 3:10: the short hand points at 3 and the big hand points at 2)

ART ACTIVITY (30 mins)

-to reinforce the concept of telling time by the minutes, let the children make
their own clock using the following materials:
-paper plate
-round fastener
-pre-cut cardboard clock hands (big and small)
-crayons and markers

Instructions:
-prepare paper plate for each child with pre-marked lines for them too
write the numbers 1-12 in front and the intervals of 5-60 (00) at the back
-they can cut the marked lines so it will be easier for them to fold and see
the equivalent of the minutes
-they can color and design their own clock
-secure the pre-cut hands with a round fastener
Note: they can use their clock every telling time activity in the classroom or
at home

DRILLS (15 mins)

-Using their own-made clock, test the children’s skills of telling and
recognizing time
-Show flash card or write the time on the board and let the children wind or
position the hands of their clock towards the correct numbers
-Go around to see their progress.

SIT-DOWN ACTIVITY (15 mins)

-Do worksheets on telling time by the minutes (encourage to use their clock)
