Activity The students will be creating a narrated
slideshow using the app Shadow Puppet Edu
to show the different characteristics of the
ocean environment, whether it be geological,
physical, or ecological characteristics. The
teacher will demonstrate how to download
the Shadow Puppet Edu app by displaying it
on the overhead. The teacher will
demonstrate that the students need to have
the characteristics as well as pictures to go
along with the characteristics. The pictures
would serve as examples. The students will
also have to do a voiceover describing the
different characteristics as well as the
examples. Each slideshow has to have
between three-to-five-slides. For example, if
the student were to focus on geological
characteristics of the ocean, the student
could use a slide to show a picture of the
Mariana Trench and do a voiceover
describing how it is an example of a
geological characteristic because it is the
deepest part of the ocean. With the Shadow
Puppet Edu app, the teacher should let them
know that it is also a requirement to add
brief text to the narrated slide show. For
example, if they have a picture associated
with the characteristic they should label the
picture. The students will then present the

narrated slideshow that they created to the
class.
The students will be collaborating where students work in
groups to pose open-ended questions about distinguishing
properties of each phase of matter through the Padlet
App. The class will be divided into three groups that are
responsible for creating questions either on the properties
of liquids, solids, or gases. The teacher will demonstrate
how to download the Padlet App by using a projector and
then open the bulletin thread for the students by building
a wall and sharing the link. The teacher will modify the
wall by titling it “Mrs. Hodges Class” and putting
directions on the wall. Then the teacher will make the
wall password protected with the password being
“Hodges01” so the students will be able to access the
wall. The groups would then begin adding their questions
that they created together to the wall. Each group would
then be responsible for answering another groups
questions together. For example, the solids group would
answer the liquids group questions, the liquid group
would answer the gases group questions, and the gases
group would answer the solids groups questions. The
students can collaborate in real time because all of the
responses appear on the original bulletin thread as soon as
they are posted. For example, a student in the solids
group can pose a question like “What are the properties of
a solid?” The students in the liquids group can then work
together to answer the thread by posting a video or text
response of their answer. Each answer should have an
example of the property as well. Another student can then
ask a true or false question about the properties of a liquid
and then the gases group can work together to answer that
question through texts or pictures. The students would
continue this until all of the questions have been
answered.
