Learning Objective Matter

2.3 The student will investigate and understand basic properties

of solids, liquids, and gases. Key concepts include

a) identification of distinguishing characteristics of solids,

liquids, and gases;

P Activity Students will be able to define matter, determine examples of

e the states of matter, and how their atoms are spaced apart.
d
a In the week before, the teacher will prepare a Google
Slide Presentation to use for the lesson. Students are competent
g
o in the use of Chromebooks, Google Classroom, and Google
Slides which will be used throughout the next week. The week
g
y long lesson will occur in 25-35 minute daily lessons and
interactive tasks. The Phases of Matter Google Slides
Presentation will be watched in incriminates as a whole group to
encourage collaborative learning. Teacher notes are included to
allow for student discussion during the presentation.

For the first lesson, the teacher will open a class

discussion about the definition of matter and students will
watch a video to introduce the states of matter. The following
three days of lessons will include a discussion on solids, then
liquids, then gases. One state for each day’s discussion. At the
end of the gas lesson, students will be sent the link to an
interactive web tool to show the atoms of solids, liquids, and
gas. Students will use the temperature slider to alter from hot to
cold in each state. The class will report results and findings to
the teacher through whole-group discussion.

On the last day of the lesson a Collaborative Assignment

will occur. Students will be paired in groups of two or three to
collaborate on what they have learned on the three phases of
matter. (Students can access and alter their Google slides
together simultaneously). Teacher-generated Google Slides will
be sent and shared with students via Google Classroom. Teacher
will review the slides with the students before beginning.

Where to locate:

-Open the Unit 6 Folder Teacher sent to them via Google

Classroom

-Student will locate their name and find their partner. (Students
may sit at desks or relocated within the classroom).

-Each slide contains a matter state: Solid, Liquid, Gas

Students Must Complete the Following:

-Students may type or insert images to represent the examples

for each state of matter. (Insert>Image>Search the Web).
Minimum of three examples but can be a combination of text
and images.

-Students will use the paint bucket tool to fill in the squares on
the graph to represent the space between atoms.

-Once finished, students will raise hands so teacher can ensure

sync of student slides in teacher’s folder.

States of Matter: Interactive - Visual representation of the atoms
in the three phases of matter and how temperature affects
them. Students can drag the temperature up and down to make
the atoms hot or cold and will be able to draw conclusions about
what they see.
