Matter is Composed of Atoms

Miss. Rowley
Grade Level: 6
Subject: Science
Length of Lesson: 40-50 Minutes
Analyze learners -22 6th graders

-Ages 10-12

-10 girls, 12 boys

Learning Styles:

-Visual, auditory, and physical

Challenges:

-This will be the first time that students will be learning about matter in the physical sense and visualizing what matter is like
while also being able to feel it. Students will use their knowledge from previous lessons to understand what an Atom is and
how atoms make up everything.

State objectives - The science standards support that transition as students examine more abstract concepts, providing a foundation in
the disciplines of science
Lesson Objectives:
- The student will investigate and understand that all matter is composed of atoms.

Teaching Methods:

- Video
- Instruction
- Making Oobleck DIY

Teaching:

- The students will watch a video about atoms and matter. The students will then answer three discussion questions
with their groups. The students will then do an activity making oobleck to show matter and how atoms make up
everything.
- The students will then complete a quiz off this website and software as well. I chose this website because of the
amount of material on here for a lesson.

Utilize media and Preview:

- This software provides high-quality information for the information of matter and how to tell the difference between
materials solids, liquids, and gases. This is for students to practice learning the difference of matter.
Prepared Environment:
- Each student will grab their computers/laptops to have the short questions and to do their quizzes on.
- I will have each of the ingredients for the students ready for them to make the oobleck and experiment with it.
Prepare Leaners:
- I will explain to the students about the software and how to get their questions and their quiz.
- At the beginning I will play the video for them about the lesson and what they are going to learn.
- The objectives will be written on the board for the students to know.
Require learner -
-
Each student will be held accountable for knowing their requirements for this lessons.
The students will be graded on their participation and collaboration with other students when doing the questions,
participation making the oobleck, and engaging the lessons.
- The students will then get graded off the participation and the quiz grade.

Evaluate and revise Describe how/when you will assess the learning.
The lesson will be assessed once the students have been all the way through the learning objectives, questions, and quiz.
They will also be assessed and graded on the participation throughout the group discussions and the quiz grade at the end of
the lesson.

6.5 The student will investigate and understand that all matter is composed of atoms. Key ideas include a) atoms consist of particles, including
electrons, protons, and neutrons; b) atoms of a particular element are similar but differ from atoms of other elements; c) elements may be
represented by chemical symbols; d) two or more atoms interact to form new substances, which are held together by electrical forces (bonds);
e) compounds may be represented by chemical formulas; f) chemical equations can be used to model chemical changes; and 10 g) a few
elements comprise the largest portion of the solid Earth, living matter, the oceans, and the atmosphere.
