Subject: Welder Favored in KS-3 Primary

Date: 8-3-18

A new Public Policy Polling survey of Democratic primary voters in Kansas’ 3rd Congressional
District finds that Brent Welder has the advantage for Tuesday’s election. He’s at 35% to 21% for
Sharice Davids, and 15% for Tom Niermann with the rest of the candidates polling below 5%.
17% of voters still remain undecided.

Welder is the best known and liked candidate. 74% of voters are familiar with him, with 63%
holding a favorable opinion. In comparison Davids has 66% name recognition, with 59% viewing
her favorably and Niermann has 49% name recognition, with 44% viewing him favorably.

Welder has strong support across the district, with double digit leads in both of the district’s
major counties. In Johnson County he’s at 36% to 21% for Davids and 15% for Niermann. In
Wyandotte County he’s at 30% to 18% for Davids and 12% for Niermann.

Welder fits the mold of what 3rd District Democrats say they’re looking for in a Congressman.
49% would prefer to have a progressive Democrat with a strong economic message, compared to
37% who would rather have a moderate Democrat who sounds some Republican themes.

If Welder does win the Democratic nomination on Tuesday, he starts out as the favorite in the
general election against Kevin Yoder. A PPP poll earlier this year found Welder with a 49-42
advantage in the district, where only 41% of voters approve of the job Donald Trump is doing to
56% who disapprove.

Public Policy Polling interviewed 543 likely Democratic primary voters on August 2nd and 3rd.
The survey’s margin of error is +/-4.2%. This research was conducted on behalf of the
Progressive Change Campaign Committee.
