5. Manufacturability

- Yes. All the part of shredder can be manufacture (blade, frame, housing, funnel)
- Blade – use cnc waterjet machine to manufacture it
- Frame – cutting and welding use gas metal arc welding (GMAW)
- Housing – cutting using bendsaw and use waterjet machine to make hole
- Funnel - use shearing machine to cutting

7. Design for assembly and maintenance

- Use non permenant joint (L-bracket) to attach all the housing. Maintenance on shredder can be
done such as ;-

- Clean up the housing and blade

- put some lubricant on the rotating part

- The funnel also can be remove from the housing. The purpose is to easier the clean-up process
of the housing and blade.

8. Sub system installation completed

- Power system – use motor (1-2 horsepower) to power the shredder

- Rotating part - use gear and shaft to transfer the power from motor to rotate the shredder

10. Performance Testing

- There is no performance testing since the product is not complete yet.

11. Health and safety

The key to ensuring the health and safety of students in the workshop is having a
good health and safety management system which protects everyone. Students must wear personal
protection equipment during in the workshop. But the students can be at particular risk because
they lack experience and trained judgement and thus they need good advice, information and
supervision. There are some technicians in the workshop to guide students during fabrication
process.

The shredder is quite dangerous to use because of the rotating sharp blades. So it needs
some safety features to make sure the shredder is safe to use and user friendly. First, the housing
of the shredder. The function of the housing is to cover the rotating sharp blades. The material of
the housing is mild steel. It is tough, ductile, malleable and good tensile strength.

Besides, the garbage is easy to put in the shredder because of the funnel. The funnel is also
made for the safety which is to prevent the garbage from be thrown out from the shredder and to
remind the users to not put their hands into the shredder.

12. Cost effective

PARTS COST (RM)

Aluminium sheet 95
Motor 0.5hp 200
Battery 80
Bearing 60
Gear 50
Waterjet service 345
Total: RM 830

13. Optimized conditions (e.g. less part)

Minimize the number of blade and static blade from 16 to 7.

- Reduce the cost of manufacture.

- Make the manufacturing process easier.

Change base from solid mild steel plate to the mild steel plate.

- Reduce the weight of the frame to make the shredder lighter then before.

( CHANGE )

Add aluminium funnel.

- To make the perfect way for the rubbish to enter the shredder and avoid the rubbish
separate everywhere.

14. Engineering for environment

 Solid waste management to reduce pollution.

Shred the rubbish to make the process of recycle and disposal become easily and reduce
land pollution because them.

 Air pollution control.

This system can manage to disposal the rubbish and can avoid the smell pollution
because of them.

 User-friendly.

Easy to handle because use a button to start the motor on the shredder.

15. Engineering for sustainability

 Materials :

The material use is mild steel and aluminum. The material use because of the durability.

The type of motor use is heavy duty and long lasting. Enough power to shred the rubbish.

 Maintenance :

Easy for maintenance process because use the permanent joint and non-permanent joint.
Example use of permanent joint is rivet and non-permanent joint is bolt and nut.

Easily do the frequent maintenance.

16. Innovation and creativity

- Using aluminium for the blade to reduce the weight and the cost.
Normally blade make from mild steel because of the strongest material, but we use
aluminium.

- Add the aluminium funnel for avoid the the rubbish separate all over the place.
Basic shredder don’t have the funnel, but we add the funnel because we aim to shred the
all type of rubbish to make the shredder environmentally responsible.

- The power sources use the 12v battery to running the shredder.
12V power of the battery is enough to running the shredder and have enough power to
shred all type of rubbish.

17. Understanding of knowledge

Plastic is one of the most common used materials in the world today, but, they cause
serious environmental pollution and exhaustion of landfill space. The recycling of waste plastic
recovers the material, which can be used to make new plastic products such as containers, plastic
lumbers and particle boards. For this to happen, the waste plastic will first be shred into small
bits making it ready for transportation and further processing. This necessitated the development
of a plastic shredder to recycle the waste plastic found in Federal University of Technology,
Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, Nigeria environments. The shredder has the feeding unit, the
shredding unit, power transmission unit and the machine frame.

18. Solution reference

We are using a hexagonal shaft instead of the keyed shaft because it is more easy to use and more reliable

19. In-line with National agenda

Nowadays our country is in the move for green technology to make a more efficient way of solid
waste disposal. With the shredder system implemented in our project, we can optimized the disposal of the
waste in our target place more efficiently. As we can see even at flat housing in the big city, the people
lived there tend to burn their household waste rather than put it at the garbage place provided. This is
because usually at this type of building there are not many garbage bin provided and the one that are
provided usually are far from their house because the garbage truck cannot access because of the small road
inside the household area. When they burn their garbage, this will release carbon dioxide thus will
contribute more to the greenhouse effect which result in the global warming. So we are intending to build
more garbage place in a small size to this area and our design truck will come in and pick up the garbage.
This is where our shredder will did its work by shredding all the garbage collected thus making the size of
the garbage smaller. If this project is implemented in all our target house area, this will make the system of
our garbage disposal more convenient and more eco-friendly.

20. Knowledge Transfer and contribution to society

To waste industry professionals the term of shredding brings to mind a whole spectrum of
equipment and, nowadays, a world of new technology. It means big business, as shredding of waste is
common practice across almost all areas of the waste industry. Far from focusing simply on paper,
shredding is a disposal technique for everything from agricultural to household waste and electrical to
industrial waste. Put simply, shredding is breaking down waste into smaller parts. Companies that have put
their efforts into developing new shredding techniques are finding
