Methods and Tools

Most common method used in dehydration:

1. Liquid (Glycol)  most often used
2. Solid (Solid Bed)  used where vey low dew point
are required, example cryogenic gas plant (water
content < 0.05 Lb/MMScf)

Main Components of Glycol System..
Absorber/ Contactor
Use counter-current flow through a trayed or packed tower to provide
intimate mixing between the glycol solution and the wet gas.
Water vapor are removed from the HC gas at this stage with
combination of absorption and chemical reaction process.
Usually consist of 6 to 24 trays depending on water dew point
required, to obtain 7 Lb/MMScf, 6 to 8 trays are common . Operate
at Low Temperature situation

Main Components of Glycol System..
R/L Glycol Exchanger
To reduce the reboiler duty by recovering some of the sensible heat
from the lean glycol. Dry gas from the contactor flows through heat
exchanger. This cools the incoming dry glycol to increase its
absorption capacity and decrease its tendency to flash in the
contactor and be lost to the dry gas.
(cooled to less than 200-250 F, more common to cool <120 F)

Main Components of Glycol System..
Re-Boiler
The reboiler provides the heat input to an Glycol stripper.

Boiling Point
-water 212 F
-TEG 546 F

Hetaed to 340-400 F

Higher Temp would vaporize more

water but may degrade the glycol

Design Considerations
1. Inlet gas Temperature
At constant Pressure, the water content gas increases as the inlet gas
temperature increases (see Figure 1).
Inlet T> 120 F result in high TEG losses
Inlet T minimum above hydrate formation Temp > 50F
< 50 F Glycol become too viscous
TEG unit usually operate with T inlet 80-100 F

2. Contactor Pressure
Have little effect on the glycol system as the P remain < 3000 Psig . Typically
500-1200 Psi are most economical

3. Number of Contactor Trays

The more trays the gretaer the dew point depression for a constant Glycol
circulation rate and Lean glycol concentration. By specifying more trays, fuel
saving can be realized due to heat duty of reboiler is directly related to glycol
concentration rate

Design Considerations…
4. Lean Glycol Temperature
High glycol losses to the gas exiting the contactor may occur when the lean
glycol Temp gets too hot. On the other hand lean glycol should be kept slightly
above the contactor gas temp to prevent HC condensation in the contactor ans
subsequent foaming the glycol. Recommended Lean Glycol 10 F hotter than gas
exiting the contractor.
5. Glycol Concentration
The higher concentration of the lean glycol the greater the dew point
depression for a given glycol concentration and number of trays. 98 and 99 %
are common for most field gas units.

6. Glycol Reboiler Temperature

Controls the water concentration in the Lean Glycol. Its good practice to limit
reboiler T to 370-390 F to minimize degradation of the Glycol. This effectively
limits the Lean glycol concentration to 95.8-98.9 %

Design Considerations…
7. Glycol Concentration Rate
When the number of absorber trays and Lean glycol concentration are fixed, the
dew point depression is function of the glycol circulation rate.
The more glycol that comes in contact with gas, the more water vapor is
dehydrated from the gas.
The minimum circulation rate to assure good glycol-gas contact is about 2
Gallons of glycol for each pound of water to be removed, whereas the
maximum rate is aboout 7 Gallons/ Lb water to be removed.
