 Curriculum Notes

Brainiac Time is Core Academics (Readin’, Writin’ and ‘Rithmetic) but with a creative/deep-thinker Dome School twist. Examples of curriculum include Miquon Mathematics, Mad Minute
Multiplication/ Division, Listening in Nature, Science Podcasts, Article-a-Day, Newsela, Explode the Code Phonics, Creative Writing Projects, Cursive, Grammar, Relevant Spelling, Oregon
Battle of the Books, Real-World Math Projects.

Oregon Theme! … is time spent with this year’s emergent theme: Oregon! While our emergent theme philosophy means that our Oregon explorations will emerge as we “follow our
noses” of curiosity throughout the year, we do have a sense of subjects/topics our Oregon theme could explore: local species of plants and animals, especially who lives and grows near our
school; wondering why the Klamath-Siskiyou Mountains run East-West when most other mountain chains run North-South?; asking, who were the first humans here, and what’s their story?;
When did immigrants arrive in Oregon, and what’s their story?; Exploring our local magical wonderland through field trips and class learning (Smokejumpers! Oregon Caves! Crater Lake!
Pacific Ocean! Darlingtonia carniverous plants! Takilma artists, hippies, and rebels! Loggers and environmentalists learning (or at least trying to learn!?!) how to get along; learning all about
Portland!; being (age-appropriately) real about our state’s legacy of racism and focusing on who’s working to make our state a better place where everyone feels included; Oregon State Bird!
State Flower! State…!!; how Oregon fits inside this land of 50 states – where are all these states, what’s their names, what’s their capital cities, and where in the heck are they??!; and
finally, connecting last year’s study of the Oceans with this year’s Oregon, what could we do in our city of Cave Junction to create less plastic for the oceans to endure?

Switch It Up Wednesday! … is when Melissa and Kaci switch classrooms and Joy steps in, too! Melissa teaches “Our Bodies/Health” with the Amethyst Kids, Kaci teachers Spanish
and Storytelling with the Serpentine Kids, and Joy hangs with a mix of all the kids while they learn Fiber Arts (finger knitting, crocheting, knitting!)

Creative Electives on Thursday afternoon is when kids can choose whether they want to sing in the Choir (Chad), dramatize with Theatre (Kaci), or paint it up with Art (Melissa). All
kids will sample each class for one week before committing to one class for the rest of the season. We make our choices three times each year, in Autumn, Winter, and Spring!

Science With Ruth is when Ruth Gibson joins us Friday mornings! During this time, Kaci will be with the Serpentine Kids teaching “Kaci and Chad’s Science Lab!”

Extended Read-a-Loud is when the teacher (me! Kaci!) reads a novel that is above most student’s Independent Reading Level. I’m there to help navigate new vocabulary, explore
challenging themes, and model oral fluency. This year we plan to start with the Birchbark Series, a realistic fiction series about an Ojibwe girl, her family and community living in the late
19th Century United States, written by Ojibwe author Louise Erdrich

Parents-as-Teachers Time/P.E. is when parents get to “strut their stuff” and teach what they know! (If no parents are available that week, we’ll play P.E. games!). So far,
parents have expressed interest in teaching capoeira, facilitating harp classes, and making and playing didgeridoos). Do you have something to share? Talk to me!!
