Prepositions of Time - at, in, on
We use:
 at for a PRECISE TIME
 in for MONTHS, YEARS, CENTURIES and LONG PERIODS
 on for DAYS and DATES

at in on
PRECISE MONTHS, YEARS, CENTURIES and LONG DAYS and
TIME PERIODS DATES

at 3 o'clock in May on Sunday

at 10.30am in summer on Tuesdays

at noon in the summer on 6 March

at dinnertime in 1990 on 25 Dec. 2010

at bedtime in the 1990s on Christmas Day

at sunrise in the next century on Independence


Day

at sunset in the Ice Age on my birthday

at the moment in the past/future on New Year's Eve

Look at these examples:


 I have a meeting at 9am.
 The shop closes at midnight.
 Jane went home at lunchtime.
 In England, it often snows in December.
 Do you think we will go to Jupiter in the future?
 There should be a lot of progress in the next century.
 Do you work on Mondays?
 Her birthday is on 20 November.
 Where will you be on New Year's Day?
Notice the use of the preposition of time at in the following standard expressions:

Expression Example

at night The stars shine at night.

at the weekend* I don't usually work at the weekend.

at I stay with my family at Christmas.


Christmas*/Easter

at the same time We finished the test at the same time.


at present He's not home at present. Try later.

*Note that in some varieties of English people say "on the weekend" and "on Christmas".
Notice the use of the prepositions of time in and on in these common expressions:

in on

in the morning on Tuesday morning

in the mornings on Saturday mornings

in the on Sunday afternoon(s)


afternoon(s)

in the evening(s) on Monday evening(s)

When we say last, next, every, this we do not also use at, in, on.
 I went to London last June. (not in last June)
 He's coming back next Tuesday. (not on next Tuesday)
 I go home every Easter. (not at every Easter)
 We'll call you this evening. (not in this evening)
Near: dekat
The book is near the glass. 
Jonathan won’t go near the river. 
There are restaurants near here.
 
Inside: di dalam
There’s a treasure inside the cave!
Inside the box, you’ll find my ring.
She has to write a note inside the book.
 
On: di atas menempel
The cat sits on the table.
Don’t jump on the bed!
Put the pillows on the sofa.
 
Beside: sebelah
Stand beside the statue, you’ll see the most beautiful sunset.
Walk slowly beside me, don’t run.
The guy beside my dad was wearing a black suit.
 
Under: di bawah

Behind: di belakang
The squirrel is hiding behind the tree.
You have to stand behind me.

In between: di antara
In between the bread, you can either place jam, salad and meat, or eggs to make a sandwich.
I learned how to skateboard between the age of 9 and 12.
The sweater came up in different colors, black, blue, red, yellow, and everything in between.
 
In front: di depan
Can you walk in front of me?
The temperature is so hot it’s like standing in front of the sun.
You can’t park your car in front of the garage.
 
Above: di atas tidak menempel
The plane is flying above the clouds.
The people above my apartment are my childhood friends.
Henry scored above average in the Spanish Exam.
 
Out of: dari (keluar)

Around: di sekeliling

Preposition of Time dan Preposition of Place


Untuk preposisi waktu dan tempat, keduanya memiliki kesamaan bentuk. Hanya saja berbeda
dalam penggunaannya, dan menyesuaikan dengan konteks kalimat. Preposisi jenis-jenis tersebut
di antaranya adalah at, in, dan on.
At dalam  preposition of time digunakan ketika menunjukkan keadaan yang terjadi pada suatu
kejadian persis. Sedangkan dalam preposition of place digunakan untuk menggambarkan benda,
lokasi atau titik spesifik.
 
Preposition of time: at
Don’t forget to catch the bus at 3.00 PM.
Bring your food at dinnertime.
No cellphones or games at bedtime.
 
Preposition of place: at
You can put the umbrella at the corner.
I’m waiting at the bus stop.
Can we meet at the class?

Dalam preposition of time, in digunakan untuk menunjukkan bulan, tahun, abad atau periode


waktu yang lama. Sedangkan dalam preposition of place, digunakan untuk menunjukkan tempat
tertutup.
 
Preposition of time: in
In May 2030, we will have flying cars.
I was born in 1997.
Barry enrolled in a class in the summer.
 
Preposition of place: in
The boys are sleeping in the car.
Put your belongings in the box.
They met in London.

On dalam preposition of time digunakan untuk hari dan tanggal. Sedangkan dalam preposition


of place, on digunakan untuk menunjukkan sebuah permukaan.
 
Preposition of time: on
We went to the zoo on Sunday.
Nate held a party on his birthday.
There was a parade on New Year’s Eve.
 
Preposition of place: on
There are a lot of pricey foods on the menu.
Don’t eat on the floor.
Can you hang a lamp on the ceiling?
