Kotter’s 8 Step Model for Change Management:

1. Create a sense of Urgency- Identify any potential threats and their effects that might
come up in the future. Have honest dialogues with people and make them key
stakeholders in the change process.
2. Form powerful coalitions- Identify key stakeholders and form a team who would be
working as a powerful coalition
What are the actions will Barbara should take :-

1. Create a sense of urgency- The major issue at EMU is due to the freeze in hiring. She
should try to convince her Director to remove the hiring freeze by creating a sense of
urgency and hire more staff for the unit.
She can put forwards the minutes of meeting held with the nurses as a report to the
Director to create a sense of urgency to reform the policies like the hiring freeze one.

2. Create a Guiding Coalition-She could consider holding a weekly grievance meeting

meets to resolve small issues. She could also institute a system wherein the nurses
have to work in a team while attending to patients Barbara can form groups of 2
nurses each-one experienced and one who is less experienced. She can also allocate
some part of performance review of a nurse on the performance of the other nurse in
the pair and vice versa. Not only this will allow the nurses to learn from each other but
will also instil a sense of responsibility among all the nurses.

3. Incorporate changes in the system- She can have a feedback collection system form
the patients where in the patients rate the nurses on points and the most liked nurse
can be awarded and felicitated. The nurses who complete a decade , 2 decades , 3
decades and so on should also be acknowledged for their services.
