SHORT SEMINAR REPORT

Seminar on Engineering Management in Transmission Substation Project

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, CTF 1, BS5, 25 October 2018
Ir. Albert Bong Chong Sar (Sarawak Energy Berhad)

The seminar was organized by Rudiyanto bin Philman Jong, Lecturers from Faculty of
Engineering UNIMAS on Engineering Management in Transmission Substation Project for
Electrical and Electronic Student. The invited speaker is Ir. Albert Bong Chong Sar from
Sarawak Energy Sdn Bhd.

The purpose of seminar was to gives information and knowledge to all Electrical and Electronic
Year 4 Student. This seminar discussed about priority, constrain, design reliability, quality, and
requirement. Sessions were organized around common themes, to facilitate discussions and the
emergence of new, revised integrated agendas for Engineering Management in Transmission
Substation Project. The themes discussed were managing the quality of the project,
Engineering design and the maintenance of the project. Approximately 120 participants from
Electrical & Electronic, Electronic Computer and Electronic Telecommunication Student
attended the meeting, including Lecturer of KNR 4553/KNL4603-Engineering Management
Courses.

The discussion revealed that Engineering Management is a process that technically feasible
safe, efficient and cost-effective base engineering practice. It is to develop, implement
engineering guide and standards which are consistently utilized by both internal and external
resources. Participant also agree, project completed can be analyse and continuously search for
improvement.

Important of Engineering Management skill needed continuously improve which is Quality of

the product. There are 4 type of quality need to analyse and continuously improve it for better
and good of project management which is, safety of the projects, staff and location. Then,
service continuity, after project is completed, service need to be done by engineer to meet the
life span of the devices or equipment. Next, the quality of technical specification, this is needing
to be done and must meet tender standards. Lastly, cost of project must balance between
equipment and life span of the equipment, safety of the equipment. As a design engineer, he or
she must fully understand tender and specifications and local authority requirement.

Participant agree that, better Engineering Management can give benefit weather to engineer
itself, but it can also give benefit to user. There are 3 future provision need to monitor which
is, to cater margin for deviation due to construction error, to cater worst case scenario that may
arise and to cover unexpected negative impact of design approximations made that affect the
services continuously.
