OUTREACH PROGRAM IN PAYATAS
The Student Council conducted the first Outreach Program of
the Graduate Student Council: Back-2-Back Seminar on
Marketing & Image Building and Media & Information Literacy
in Partnership with Puno-Masa UMC United Youth Fellowship
in Payatas Quezon City Area last August 26. 44 youth (with
some adults) participated the activity. They came from
different schools like Payatas B Elementary School, Polytechnic
University of the Philippines, New Era University, Our Lady of
Fatima University, Bestlink Colleges of the Philippines, Quezon
City Polytechnic University, Collegio de Montalban, Justice
Cecilia Muñoz Palma High School, Harris Memorial College,
National College of Business and Arts, Fairview Elementary
School, Batasan Hills National High School, University of Rizal
System, Metro Manila College and ICCT College, and they
expressed their thanksgiving and gratefulness for the speakers
and for the new insights & knowledge they gained.

Present during the activity were Dr. Jojo Paala (College Secretary)
& Engr. Meinrado Samonte (SC Adviser) who gave words of
encouragement for the participants and support for the SC. Dean
Julian Abuso & Ms. Vicky Serrano also supported the activity by
providing the transportation for the team.

The University of the East Graduate School (UEGS) in celebration of its 70th
Founding Anniversary held PAGPAPAHALAGA: An appreciation and grateful
acknowledgement for all services and commitments of some academic
personas in raising the ideals of the institution towards worth and excellence
through the initiative of the Dean Julian Abuso organized through the help of
the UEGS Program Coordinators, Staff and Student Council. Honorees are:

Conference, the Graduate School Students 

led by Ms. Laarni J. de Belen (UEGS Student
Council President) and Ms. Roselle Marie
Caduduan (UEGS Student Council External
Vice President) made a surprise tribute to
Dean Julian Abuso to honor his contribution
& dedication, and for being innovative and a
visionary. With the support of the young and

marched to the center of the stage with flash
cards saying, “Thank you Dean. We love you.”
They also gave him his favorite delicacies:

The teary-eyed Dean gladly accepted the gifts
and thanked the students for their sincerity &
thoughtfulness.  In his response, he promised
to continually lead the UE Graduate School to
fly high and be relevant not only to the UE
community but to the rest of the country. - ET

The vast horizon of higher education is a tablet where academic
institutions can freely shine as they write their own narratives. This
September, 2018 three bands of light in the horizons crisscross
without collision — the 70th Anniversary of the University of the East
Graduate School, the Fourth ueKAMAYNILAAN Research Conference
and the 72nd Foundation Anniversary celebration of our University.
Indeed, a cause for celebration. There is rhyme and rhythm.
As a narrative of experiences, the 70th years of the Graduate School’s
academic journey represent the success of an original vision of
advanced education and professional training spawned by the
founding dean and corps of faculty. Through time, the long journey
was traveled by the succeeding deans and sets of faculty who
nurtured and expanded academic programs. Indeed, a moment of
thanksgiving.
For all its freshness and youth, the Fourth ueKAMAYNILAAN
Research Conference comes as strong beam of light that the
Graduate School pursues in the name of today’s vision and
configuration of graduate education within the country and global
communities. All Conference activities are means to define the
Graduate School’s identity as a venue where the search for more
light, knowledge and truth is a clear item in its agenda.
The 72nd Foundation Anniversary celebration, on the other hand, is
the major beam of light that mirrors the University’s continuing
journey as a major education institution in the country and ASEAN
community. This band of light provides the strength and energy to all
constituents of UE, including the Graduate School.
May the power generated by the dancing lights of September, 2018
inspire all of us in the Graduate School and all Conference
participants to define and share the meanings of knowledge journey
with the theme “Exploring the Forest of Metropolitan Societies
Through the Lenses of Research.”

“What people actually refer to as research nowadays is
really just googling”-Delmot Mulroney. 



Nowadays, they say that the most pressing challenges for
librarians and teachers is to introduce and distinguish
googling from research. It is an honor to be part of an
institution like the University of the East Graduate School
that exposes its students and faculty to the real meaning
and value of research. According to Merriam-Webster
Dictionary, Research means “careful or diligent search;
investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery
and interpretation of facts,…”
One of the objectives of the University of the East
Graduate School (UEGS) is “To foster the search for truth
and the transmission and use of knowledge through
scientific and systematic methods.” Thus, the UEGS
through ueKAMAYNILAAN gathered everyone here today—
Graduate Students, Faculty, Researchers and
Professionals. The goal is to awaken and foster in us the
passion for searching for truth which will help us to be
competent and knowledgeable in our chosen profession
and become an influencer. As the proverb says, “He who
does not research has nothing to teach.”
Thank you for your presence today. I am certain that this
conference entitled, “Exploring the Forest of Metropolitan
Societies Through the Lenses of Research” is going to be
informative and worthwhile because this conference will
discuss different aspects that will lead to a better and
happier world. Mark Zuckerberg says and I quote: “Our
society needs more heroes who are scientists, researchers
and engineers. We need to celebrate and reward the
people who cure diseases, expand our understanding of
humanity and work to improve people’s lives.”
