3. EXECUTION
3.1 Ceiling Board Installation
3.1.1 Meet at the project site with the installers of related work and clerk of works or site
Architect and review the coordination and sequencing of work to ensure that
everything to be concealed by ceiling board has been accomplished, and that
access panels, openings, supplementary framing and blocking and similar
provision have been completed.
3.1.2 Locate exposed end-butt joints as far from centre of ceilings as possible, and
stagger not less than 300mm alternate courses of board.
3.1.3 Install ceiling boards in the direction and manner which shall minimize the number
of end-butt joints, and which shall avoid end joints in the central area of each
ceiling. Stagger end joints at least 300mm. Back all joints with a framing member.
3.1.4 Install exposed ceiling board with face side out. Do not install imperfect, damaged
or damp boards. Butt boards together for a light contact at edges and ends with
not more than 1.5mm open space between boards. Do not force into place.
3.1.5 Locate edge and end joints over supports. Position boards so that like edges abut,
tapered edges against tapered edges and mill-cut or field-cut ends against mill-
cut or field cut ends. Do not place tapered edges against cut edges or ends.
3.1.6 Attach ceiling board to framing and blocking as required for additional support at
openings and cutouts.
3.1.7 Form control joints and expansion joints with space between edges of boards,
prepared to receive trim accessories.
3.1.8 Space fasteners in ceiling boards in accordance with referenced standards and
manufacturer's recommendations.
3.2 Methods of Gypsum Board Application
3.2.1 Single Layer Application:
a) On ceilings apply gypsum board after partition board application to the
greatest extent possible.
b) Fasten single layer applications with screws of type as previously
specified.
3.2.2 Double Layer Application:
a) Fasten both base layer and face layer separately to the supports with
screws.
b) Screws for double layer application shall be of type as previously
specified. Joints shall be staggered to overlap alignment of double layer
application.

3.3 Installation of Gypsum Plasterboard Trim Accessories
3.3.1 General:
Where feasible, use the same fasteners to anchor trim accessory flanges as
required to fasten gypsum board to the supports. Otherwise, fasten flanges by
nailing or stapling in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and
recommendations.
3.3.2 Install J-type trim at the edges of gypsum board on each side of expansion joints
in suspended ceilings. The internal faces of the joints (inside ceiling plenums)
shall be covered with a continuous 0.95mm thick sheet metal strip fastened along
one edge only with sheet metal screws engaging the inner leg of the J-type edge
trim.
3.3.3 Where suspended gypsum board ceilings terminate against walls, columns,
partitions or the like provide metal J-type trim at gypsum board edges. The
trimmed ceiling board edges shall be set back from the vertical wall or vertical
surface to form a perimeter reveal of width as indicated on the drawings or as
directed by the Architect.
3.4 Finishing of Gypsum Board
3.4.1 General:
Apply treatment at gypsum board joints (both directions), flanges of trim
accessories, penetrations, fastener heads, surface defects and elsewhere as
required to prepare work for decoration. Prefill open joints using type of compound
recommended by manufacturer.
a) Apply joint tape at joints between gypsum boards, except where trim
accessories are indicated.
b) Apply joint compound in 3 coats (not including prefill of openings in base),
and sand between last 3 coats and after last coat.
3.4.2 Repair of Fastener Pop:
a) Repair fastener pop by driving new fastener approximately 38mm from
defect and reseat defective fastener where possible.
b) When face paper is punctured, drive new fastener approximately 38mm
from the defect and remove the incorrectly installed fastener.
c) Fill damaged surface with compound and sand level.
3.5 Fibrous Plasterboard Installation
3.5.1 Ensure that everything to be concealed by the fibrous plasterboard has been
accomplished, and that access panels, openings, supplementary framing and
blocking and similar provision have been completed. Installation of fibrous
plasterboard ceiling is to be carried out by experienced and competent tradesmen.
3.5.2 Locate exposed end-butt joints as far from centre of ceilings as possible, and
stagger not less than 300mm alternate courses of board. Back all joints with a
framing member.
3.5.3 Do not install imperfect or damaged boards. Butt boards together for a light
contact at edges and ends with not more than 1.5mm open space between
boards. Do not force into place. When grouting is not applied at the back of the
flush joint, the joint shall be kept open 10mm to facilitate caulking with bonding
compound from the face side. The joint is to be trowelled flush.
3.5.4 Attach fibrous plasterboard to framing and blocking as required for additional
supports at openings and cutouts.
3.5.5 Form control joints and expansion joints with space between edges of boards,
prepared to receive trim accessories.

3.5.6 Space fasteners in fibrous plasterboards in accordance with referenced standards
and manufacturer's recommendations.
3.5.7 To produce flush joints in the ceiling boards to obtain a seamless surface, apply a
bonding compound recommended by the manufacturer in the joints from the face
side. The joint is then trowelled with stopping compound to leave a flush surface
in true relationship to the adjacent surface.
3.5.8 Where fibrous plasterboard ceilings terminate against walls or other vertical
surfaces, provide from vertical wall or surface to form a perimeter reveal of width
as indicated on the drawings or as directed by the Architect.
3.6 Protection:
3.6.1 Protect all ceiling board work from damage and deterioration during remainder of
construction period.
3.6.2 Replace any damaged gypsum, fibrous-plaster and calcium silicate board work at
no cost to the Employer.
