B4A3 Video-Conferencing Lesson

Grade Level/Subject Grade 5 Mathematics

Standards  CC.2.4.5.A.2 - Represent and interpret data using appropriate
scale.
o M05.D-M.2.1.2 - Display and interpret data shown in
tallies, tables, charts, pictographs, bar graphs, and line
graphs, and use a title, appropriate scale, and labels. A grid
will be provided to display data on bar graphs or line
graphs.
 ISTE NETS for Students – Empowered Learner Standard 1b:
Students build networks and customize their learning
environments in ways that support the learning process.
Objectives  Students will be able to collect, display, and interpret data through
bar graphs, and use a title, appropriate scale, and labels.
 Students will be able to build a network and customize their
learning environment by surveying an out-of-state class via Skype.
Materials  Pencil
 Paper
 Computer with Internet access
 Google Docs
 Skype
 Students’ 1:1 devices
 Posters (one per group)
 Crayons/colored pencils/markers
 Scratch paper
 Exit tickets
Anticipatory Set 1. The teacher will introduce students to surveying and discuss the
purposes of doing so. (This will be a continued discussion of the
ongoing unit, related to data collection and displaying/interpreting
results.)
2. The teacher will also remind students of the guest Skype session
that will be completed today (introduced earlier in the week).
3. The teacher will ask students to complete a survey on a Google
Form, using their 1:1 devices, which asks them to indicate their
favorite flavor of ice cream.
a. Chocolate
b. Vanilla
c. Cookies and cream
d. Mint chocolate chip
e. Chocolate chip cookie dough

Procedures 1. The teacher will display the results of the Google Form over the
projector.
2. The teacher will facilitate student discussion regarding the results
of the Google Form.
a. What are some things you notice?
b. Which category scored the highest?
c. Which category scored the lowest?
d. Do you think results may be similar or different when
compared with other classes?
3. The teacher will direct groups to begin their group bar graph. The
bar graph will be based on the results of the Google Form
displayed on the projector. Students will be asked to leave extra
room, as they will be comparing their results with another class.
The teacher will review and assist with the development of the bar
graphs as needed.
4. The teacher will begin to prepare the Skype session with a guest
fifth-grade teacher’s class from another state (class to be found via
the “Skype in the Classroom” website). As the teacher does so, the
teacher will facilitate discussion as students review class rules and
etiquette to maintain when in the presence of guests. Additional or
more detailed rules will be reviewed as needed in terms of Skype
guests.
5. The two classes will engage in the Skype session. Students will
take turns asking the guest class over Skype the same survey
questions. The two classes will collaborate and take their time in
collecting the results. Students will be encouraged to maintain
tallies as a rough copy of the data collection.
6. The class will verify the collected data with the other class through
the Skype session.
7. Upon conclusion of the Skype session, groups will transform their
bar graph into a double bar graph, including the results of the
guest class. The teacher will review and assist with the
development of the double bar graphs as needed.
8. Upon completion, groups will compare their double bar graphs
with other groups and determine accuracy.
Closing 1. The activity will close with a discussion on the results between the
two classes, again noting questions including, but not limited to:
a. What are some things you now notice?
b. Which category scored the highest?
c. Which category scored the lowest?
d. How did results compare overall with the other class?
2. Groups will turn in their double bar graphs to the teacher.
3. Students will complete an exit ticket on paper individually:
a. Did you enjoy surveying another class via Skype?
b. Share your thoughts on our interactions with the class
using Skype.

c. What could we do to improve how we survey via Skype?

groups and during the Skype session.
 The teacher will be monitoring and making notes of observations.
 Exit tickets will be used to monitor student learning and
participation.
 Students will be evaluated on their completed double bar graphs.
