Theory Of Structure Mohammed Alhashimi

2-Frames

Example1:- Classify if the following frames is determinate or

indeterminate. If statically indeterminate, what is the number of degree of
indeterminacy?

SOLUTION:-

NOTE: If the members form closed loop, it’s necessary to use

the method of sections and "cut" the loop apart.

r = 9, n = 2
9>6
Statically indeterminate to the third degree

Example2:- Classify if the following frames is determinate or

indeterminate. If statically indeterminate, what is the number of degree of
indeterminacy?

SOLUTION:-

r = 9, n = 1
9>3
Statically
indeterminate to
the sixth degree

3-Trusses

Considering:

b = number of members.
r = number of reactions.
j = number of joints.

Stability:
Structure will be unstable in the following cases:
1) b + r < 2 j
2) b + r ≥ 2 j (but all reactions are parallel)
3) b + r ≥ 2 j (but all reactions are concurrent)
Determinacy (provided of stability):
b + r = 2 j statically determinate
b + r > 2 j statically indeterminate
degree of indeterminacy = b + r – 2 j

Example1:- Classify if the following truss is determinate or

indeterminate, stable or unstable. Assume r=3
Theory Of Structure Mohammed Alhashimi
SOLUTION:-

b = 11,
r = 3,
j = 7,
b + r = 11+3 = 14, 2j = 2x7 = 14.
The truss is stable and internally determinate.

Example2:- Classify if the following truss is determinate or

indeterminate, stable or unstable. Assume r=3

Solution
b = 15,
r = 3,
j = 9,
b + r = 15+3 = 18,
2j = 2x9 = 18.
The truss is stable and internally determinate

Example3:- Classify if the following truss is determinate or

indeterminate, stable or unstable.

Solution
b = 18,
r = 3,
j = 10,
b+ r = 18+3 = 21,
2j = 2x10 = 20.
The truss is stable and internally indeterminate.
