STATIC STABILITY
Engr. Kenneth Lua
Types of Supports
Types of Supports
Static Determinacy and Stability

i = degree of indeterminacy
i < 0 : Unstable
i = 0 : Stable and Determinate (see exceptions next slide)
i > 0 : Stable but indeterminate to the ith degree (see exceptions next slide)

Reference: Hibbeler
Static Determinacy and Stability

Exceptions :

Structures with parallel and concurrent reactions will always be UNSTABLE.

Reference: Hibbeler
Static Determinacy and Stability - Examples

r=3
r=3 m=2
m=2 j=3
j=3 c=0
c=0 therefore i = 3 + 3(2) -3(3) – 0 = 0 :
therefore i = 3 + 3(2) -3(3) – 0 = 0 : Determinate but UNSTABLE due to
Stable and Determinate concurrent reactions

r=3
m=3
j=4
c=2
therefore i = 3 + 3(3) -3(4) – 2 = -2 :

UNSTABLE (also from visual inspection,

A is free to slide horizontally)

Reference: Hibbeler
Static Determinacy and Stability - Examples

r=7 r=5 r=3

m=6 m=3 m=5
j=7 j=4 j=5
c=3 c=2 c=0
therefore i = 3 + 3(2) -3(3) – 0 = 1 : therefore i = 5 + 3(3) -3(5) – 2 = 0 : therefore i = 3 + 3(5) -3(5) – 0 = 0 :
Indeterminate to the 1st degree Determinate Indeterminate to the 3rd degree
