Cell Organelle Project

In order to summarize your knowledge of the cell organelles, you will complete a cell organelle project identifying
the organelles and their functions. The manner you display your knowledge will be up to you.

Option 1: Cell Brochure

Design a brochure using the cell as an attraction such as an amusement park, carnival, or hotel. The brochure must
include the listed organelles which "delight and amaze" their potential customers. Humor and creativity are
encouraged. Use diagrams to illustrate the features of the cell. Creativity is strongly encouraged but you must
remember to include the real facts about the cell you choose.

Option 2: Haikus
A Haiku is a Japanese poem written in 3 lines. In this class our definition of a Haiku will be: the first line has exactly 5
syllables, second line 7, and third line 5. An example is below:
It’s the control center
Called the nucleus of the cell
Contains DNA
Please write a Haiku about each organelle incorporating the function/nickname of that organelle. Then creatively
display your haikus in hardcover book and have them neatly decorated. (Not just copied and pasted pictures please)

Option 3: Cell Collage

Draw a cell diagram on a piece of paper with all of the listed organelles. Then, cut out magazine or newspaper
pictures of objects will similar functions as each of the cell organelles. Neatly write descriptions of each organelle
and how they relate to the magazine or newspaper you cut out. Paste the cell diagram you drew in the middle of a
poster and the pictures of objects around it. Draw pointers from each of your analogies to the correct organelle on
your diagram to create a collage. Creativity is strongly encouraged but you must remember to include the real facts
about the cell you choose.

Option 4: Cell Journey Story

Imagine you somehow ended up inside an animal cell. Use your imagination and scientific knowledge of cells to
explain the journey you and your group would embark upon. Be sure to include a labeled cell diagram to clearly
illustrate the path of your travels. Some possible ideas of ways to describe your travels include journal entries, a
story, photo album with captions, or a fictional story. Be sure to include the listed organelles. Creativity is strongly
encouraged but you must remember to include the real facts about the cell you choose.

Option 5: Cell Trading Cards

Your assignment is to make a “trading card” for each of the cell organelles listed below. Each trading card will
feature a picture of the organelle on one side and information about it on the other such as location in the cell,
function, which cells it’s found in, and any other interesting statistics. The cards must come in a decorated baseball
card case or holding. Think baseball cards, but for cells.

Option 6: Cell Organelle Model

Your assignment is to construct a model of a cell organelle that shows how the organelle's ultrastructure gives rise
to its function. A key must be included naming all parts of the organelle. A typed summary should be
attached/included that explains how the structure of the organelle helps its function. No food materials are
allowed. The model must be 3-dimensional and must be able to stand or lay on the lab counter. Supplies must be
provided by the student if this option is chosen.
Cell Project Requirements
You must specify the cell type you choose on your project somewhere. You must include the
following organelles and their functions/analogies:
Animal Cell:
 Cytoplasm  Rough endoplasmic  Nucleus
 Cytoskeleton reticulum  Nucleolus
 Golgi apparatus  Smooth endoplasmic  Peroxisomes
 Mitochondria reticulum  Ribosomes
 Cell membrane  Centrioles  Lysosomes

Plant Cell: (Because there are more organelles you can receive up to 6 bonus points for using a
plant cell)
 All of the animal cells organelles
 Chloroplasts
 Cell wall
 Vacuole
Point Breakdown

Organelles (5 points each) x 13 organelles = _____________ points

(6 points possible EC)

Neatness (15 points possible) = _____________ points

Creativity (10 points possible) = _____________ points

Total = _____________ points
