Chapter I

Empirical research: Mean : based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience
rather than theory or pure logic (google translate).

Organizational research questions usually involve Causal relationship : in which it is anticipated that one
factor influences another.

X  Y : but, we don’t say x influence Y, rather: The Increase in X will increase Y in …much. Or, There is a
positive relationship or negative relationship between X and Y

We should remember some ‘big name’ in your area of study:

e.g. Schwab, Robert I Sutton and Barry M Staw

Chapter 2:

Model of Empirical Research

Discuss a lot on exhibit 2.2 entitled Empirical research model page 15.

- Conceptual (Construct) relationship (a)

- Operational relationship (c) and (d)
- Internal validity (b1 and b2)
Theory building: a theory is developed based on many studies, because result of one study is a tentative,
on certain time, location, situation, etc. It needs many studies to ensure that relationship b/w variables
are stable (fixed) so we can generate new theory.
