Fall 2018 MTH101: Calculus and Analytical Geometry

Assignment No. 1 (Lectures# 1 to 15) Total Marks: 20

Question No.1: Marks: 5

Find the coordinates of the center and radius of the circle, whose equation is
16 x 2  24 x  16 y 2  8 y  10  0.

Solutions:
As we have, 16𝑥 2 + 24𝑥 + 16𝑦 2 + 8𝑦 + 10 = 0

By subtracting 10 on both sides we have,

16𝑥 2 + 24𝑥 + 16𝑦 2 + 8𝑦 = −10

In order to complete the square on left side we add 9 and 1 on both sides so we have,

16𝑥 2 + 24𝑥 + 9 + 16𝑦 2 + 8𝑦 + 1 = −10 + 9 + 1

Then we have now,

(4𝑥 + 3)2 + (4𝑦 + 1)2 = 0
Comparing it with standard form of equation we have,
The centre of the circle will be (-3,-1) and radius will be 0
