Captain Cook Cairn and Erosion meeting

Cooks Beach

18th December 2018

A warm welcome from Heather Bruce to Council representatives, Jan (Erosion Engineer ) and
ratepayers from Mercury Bay South.

A hand out of the new proposed Cairn was distributed. This plan was undertaken by Sue Costello
and was aligned to the site of the actual spot where Cook moored. It was agreed this was an area of
huge National importance and will be commemorated by a Flotilla and naval ships which will
navigate the point and land at Cooks Beach. The actual spot where the new cairn and landscaping
would occur was historically acceptable to everyone. John Steele and his team are responsible for
the undertaking of the festivities revolving around Tuia 250.

The Cairn landscaping and Erosion initiatives will be completed by October 2019. We are looking at
all sorts of procedures to alleviate the Erosion Problems. Presently we have a dialogue with the
Regional Council. Jan will communicate options by mid – January and these will include Stop back
Wall which will be buried in a trench, possibly groynes and Gabion Basket. The design must adapt to
changes in the environment. By gathering data historically, presently and considering local
knowledge a plan can be devised. The budget is $400,000
