Harbor Light To Shine Again

By Kevin Boyle

Just three weeks short of the

seventh anniversary of the storm
that changed everything, word
came from the Buildings Depart-

shine again. A Temporary Cer-

granted on Tuesday, October 2,
setting the table for the much-
loved, much-missed pub/restau-

The original building burned to
the ground on the night of Hurri-

A CURE
A family 5k Walk/Run
On the morning of Sunday, September 29th, the weather was beautiful on the boardwalk at Beach 102nd Street with over 300 runners, walk-
ers, scooters, and baby stroller pushers assembled for the start of the Third Annual “Catch a Cure” 5K Family Walk/Run fundraiser for Cancer
Awareness. This event raises money to help benefit families in our community touched by cancer. All the money raised was donated to the
Rockaway Wish, a local non-profit organization that recognizes the needs of the community, and volunteers their time and talents to assist
our neighbors during difficult times. The day was about our local communities being UNITED as ONE! We were not individually Breezy Point,
Rockaway Beach, or Broad Channel. On this day we were a FAMILY. Julia Courtney kicked it off with her amazing voice singing National
Anthem followed by Our Father Jim Cunningham of St. Francis de Sales offered a prayer before the race.
Following the race, everyone gathered at the Community House for the results, awards, drinks, food, and to enjoy great company and offered
special recognition of certain people. Catch a Cure will always honor and remember a person from each of our local communities. Special
thanks to the families who allowed us to be their extended family. We remembered Anne Marie Sullivan of Broad Channel, Clare Droesch of
Rockaway Beach, and Billy “K-9” Kinane of Breezy Point. The Honorees of this day were Teri Bautz of Broad Channel, Pat Orzano of Rockaway
Beach and Matthew Piccione of Breezy Point. They all had a special place in everyone’s heart that day.
The Catch a Cure event could not have been such a tremendous success without the hard work of the Core 4: Robin Hoffman, Linda Humphrey,
Jean Condon, and Megan Rochelle. For helping make this day an even bigger success, special thanks goes out to John Edwards of Rockapulco
Run, Sue Carlton, Marty Hoffman, Bozena Lipiec, DJ Kelly Kelley, Christine O’Connor, Jean Marie Munson, Barbara Hart tech wizard, Vin Condon,
Malia Freedhand, Eva Freedhand, Lorraine Freedhand, Angela Caiazzo, Julia Courtney our star vocalist, Father Jim Cunningham, Glenn and
Laura Pfister, Visconti Florist, Miss Elaine’s Dance Company, Christian Foti, Joe Leahy, Tom Farr, Jimmy Orangeman Carlton, Ridgewood Savings
Bank, Jeannette Mulholland, LouAnn Mannino, Joan Crowley, and Rockaway Point Volunteer Ambulance for their support, time, and hard work.
A special thank you goes to Kelly Brooke and their staff at Community House.
This event absolutely could not have taken place without the incredible generosity and support of ALL our sponsors! Their heartfelt contribu-
tions truly make a difference in people’s lives and will never be forgotten.
Be sure to save the date: Sunday, September 27, 2020 for the Fourth Annual “Catch a Cure” Family Walk/Run.
