Selecting what you wish to dye - Pick a fabric that is a lighter colour
than the dyes that you wish to use.

- The advantage of using a coloured gar-

ment is that you can work your tying
technique such the original color becomes
a part of the pattern at the end of the all
the dyeing.
The image along side was dyed using a
black dye on a white cloth. As you can
see, the parts that were tied have
remained white and rest has taken on the
color of the dye.
If the same thing had been done on a
yellow cloth, the effect and final outcome
would have been competely different !

- Always make sure that the garment has

been washed atleast once before you
proceed with dyeing. It is essential to
remove the sizing from the material to
ensure uniform absorbtion of the dye.

If its your first time, it is best to start with

a garment you won’t regret experiment-
ing with.

Different Tying Techniques The tying techinique that you use will deter-
mine the pattern on your garment.

1. Tying Knots in your garment will give you

a creased pattern in the areas that are tied
up. The Dye will not reach right inside and
hence an experimental technique as you will
not know what the final outcome will be like.
Works great for scarves, t-shirts and nap-
kins.

2. Use rubber bands /string at interval in

your garment to create lines. The parts
hidden under the bands will not get dyed.
This is also called ‘leharya’ technique in
Rajasthan as the result looks like waves
(lehar). You can get great results by tying
different parts of the garment at different
angles.

3. Use beads and tie the garment around

them with string/rubber bands. The finer the
beads, the more delicate will be the outcome.
This is a derivation of the ‘bandhani’ tech-
nique of tie-dye from Gujarat.

There are no limits to the different tying

styles that you can adopt. Even mix all of the
above and see the result!!

You will need:
Basic Dyeing Process -Container large enough to soak the entire
garment.
-Water to boil
-Salt (approx 2tbp for every litre of water)
-Hot water Dyes
-Gloves
-Stick /rod

1. Fill the container with enough water to

soak the part that you wish to dye.

2. Add the dye and salt and let the water

come to boil.

3. Put in your garment and let the water

continue to boil while you soak your gar-
ment underwater with the help of the stick.

4. Keep stirring occassionally to ensure

that there are no dye lumps that are
formed on the garment.

5. After about 10 mins, carefully remove

the garment. Once it cools a little, hold it
under running water to remove excess dye.

Tips If working with 2 or more colours,
always work your way from light to dark
and allow for a third color if the dyes are
going to overlap.

If you want to mix dyes to get another

color or alter the shade, use a small cloth
sample first to check the dye color and
modify accordingly. Its best to keep sam-
ples with notes if you are hoping to repeat
the same result across other garments.

Do not put freshly dyed garments to dry

in direct sunlight. Make sure you open up
and stretch the garment when handing it
out to dry so that no residual dye will
touch another part of the garment.
