UNNAO

INTRODUCTION

Unnao is the headquarters of Unnao district in Uttar


Pradesh, India between Kanpur and Lucknow. Unnao is a large industrial city with three industrial
suburbs around it. The city is famous for its leather, mosquito
net, Zardozi and chemical industries. Unnao is an historical city with many historical buildings
and structures. Trans Ganga City, a new satellite town of Unnao is being developed in order to
develop Unnao as a major industrial and infrastructural hub as the region comes under Kanpur-
Lucknow Counter Magnet Area. Unnao district is a part of Central Ganges Plain of the state
covering an area of 4558 km2. The city is enlisted as a municipality of Kanpur metropolitan
area and is the second largest city within the metropolitan area.

The District is roughly a parallelogram in shape and lies between Latitude 26°8' N & 27°2' N and
Longitude 80°3' E & 81°3' E. It is bounded on the North by District Hardoi, on the East by District
Lucknow, on the South by District Rae Bareli and on the West by the Ganga which separates it
from districts of Kanpur & Fatehpur.
The Unnao urban agglomeration includes municipal limits of Unnao city and Shuklaganj, the
villages of Unnao Rural, Deeh, Dostinagar, Turkmannagar, Ganjauli,Singrosi, Shakpur,
Magarwara, Akrampur, Galgalha, Sahjani, Maswasi, Haibatpur, Kathadal Narainpur, Dhaudhi
Rautapur which together makes up the population of 303,224.

Tanning is the biggest industry in Unnao. Unnao is known for its leather industry and leather
goods. Superhouse Group, Mirza Tanners, Rahman Exports, and Zamzam Tanners, Mahavir
Spinfab Pvt. Ltd., Parash Nathtech Garments Pvt. Ltd., Real enterprises (part of Baqai exports
Gujarat) in large factories in Unnao. Banthar Leather Technology Park, Magarwara Industrial area
and Unnao Industrial area developed by UPSIDC are major industrial suburbs of Unnao. Unnao is
known for printing & dyeing for Lihaf (quilts) and mosquito net production and major producers
are Haq and Sons Dyeing and Printing company and other major producers include F.R Dyeing
and Printing Works.

The city consists of Engineering Colleges and Management Institutes along with many Hindi and
English Medium schools. Engineering Colleges are approved by AICTE and affiliated to Dr A P
J Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow. Majority of the schools are affiliated to Uttar
Pradesh Board but there are some which have affiliations to ICSE-ISC and CBSE.

Unnao is seamlessly connected through Indian Railways. Unnao railway station is the junction
point for Rae Bareli, Allahabad, Hardoi, Balamau situated at Lucknow-Kanpur stretch. Trains for
major cities like Agra, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Nagpur, Vijaywada, Chennai,
Coimbatore, Palakkad, Bhubaneswar, Bhadrak, Cuttak, Chennai, Chandigarh, Chitrakoot, Cochin,
Delhi, Gorakhpur, Ernakulam, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu Tawi, Jhansi, Jalandhar, Amritsar,
Panipat, Gorakhpur, Gwalior,
Darbhanga, Kota, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Puri, Surat, Trivandrum, Vadodara, Ujjain, Varanasi,
Vadodara, can be boarded here.

The major national highway NH 25 passes through Unnao which has bypass from Unnao. The State
Highway which is 78 km encompasses Unnao is in good condition. Lucknow-Agra Expressway
which will be India's longest access-controlled expressway will pass through Unnao district and
the work is under construction. It will be a six-lane expressway.

The nearest airport is Lucknow International Airport towards east (approx. 50 km) and Kanpur
Airport towards west (approx. 25 km).

UNNAO CITY
Unnao is a district headquarter and a seat of administration for the district of Unnao. The Unnao
city has urban population of 1,77,658 people and has a total physical area of 21.5 Sq. Km. with
Population density of the city is 8263 persons per km2. There are 29 wards in the city, among
them Unnao Ward No 01 is the most populous ward with population of about 10 thousand
and Unnao Ward No 25 is the least populous ward with population of 4236.

DEMOGRAPHIC

The city is home to about 1.8 lakh people, among them about 93 thousand (52%) are male and
about 85 thousand (48%) are female. 86% of the whole population are from general caste, 14%
are from schedule caste and 0% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of
Unnao nagar palika parishad is 11%, among them 53% are boys and 47% are girls. There are about
33 thousand households in the city and an average 5 persons live in every family.

SEX RATIO

As of 2011 census there are 910 females per 1000 male in the city. Sex ratio in general caste is
904, in schedule caste is 952 and in schedule tribe is 830. There are 875 girls under 6 years of age
per 1000 boys of the same age in the city. Overall sex ratio in the city has increased by 13 females
per 1000 male during the years from 2001 to 2011. Child sex ratio here has decreased by 32 girls
per 1000 boys during the same time.

LITERACY

Total about 1.3 lakh people in the city are literate, among them about 70 thousand are male and
about 59 thousand are female. Literacy rate (children under 6 are excluded) of Unnao is 82%. 85%
of male and 78% of female population are literate here. Overall literacy rate in the city has
increased by 6%. Male literacy has gone up by 3% and female literacy rate has gone up by 8%.

WORKERS PROFILE

Unnao has 30% (about 52 thousand) population engaged in either main or marginal works. 48%
male and 9% female population are working population. 39% of total male population are main
(full time) workers and 10% are marginal (part time) workers. For women 6% of total female
population are main and 3% are marginal workers.
