DESIGN OF A SINGLY REINFORCED RECTANGULAR BEAM

A reinforced concrete beam has width equal to 300mm and total depth equal to 700mm,
with a cover of 40mm to the center of the reinforcement. Design the beam if it is
subjected to a total bending moment of 150kN-m. Use M20 concrete and HYSD bars of
grade 415. Anchor bars

Solution:

b = 300mm 660mm

d = 700-40 = 660 mm

Factor of safety (ƴf)= 1.5 40mm

MuD = ƴf x Mu = 1.5x150 300mm

= 225kN-m = 225x106 N-mm

Hence the compression reinforcement is not required. Also the beam is under
reinforced.
