PUBLIC SPEAKING BEST PRACTISE
1. BACKGROUND & RATIONALE

The standard of English among pupils in Burneiis in a cause for concern. This is reflected by
the low academic achievement of students in the public examinations. The percentage of
passes for the English Language subject in the said examination has always been below par.
As compared with the other subjects, the percentage of English Language passes has always
been the lowest. There has been a hue and cry among members of the public over this
issue.

Through public speaking, it is hoped that awareness it created among the importance of
upgrading themselves in the English language. It would also serve as a catalyst for students
to start using and learning English in their daily lives and in a more serious manner.

2. OBJECTIVES

The program aims to develop the heart of public speaking amongstpupilsand they it will be:

 To encourage the development of oral communication skills among students.


 To promote the use of plain English
 To boost confidence for platform skills.

3. INCENTIVES/PRIZES

The reward and additional incentives are provided for every level of this program, such as

4. DATES & SCHEDULES

The process of change runs through 19th July 2010 to November 2010. The dates and
schedule of the public speaking are as follows:

5. PUBLIC SPEAKING FORMAT

The public speaking is divided into 2 sections.

a. Section 1: To be conducted after the morning assembly (7:15-7:30)


b. Section 2: To be conducted during the break time (10:15-10:30)

For section 1, pupils are selected by level/year and they will be ask to come forward and
deliver their speech. Only one pupil will be selected in each level/year. Their speech will be
observe, listen and assess by teachers using the measurement tool.

For section 2, pupils will be divided into 2 groups; (i) upper primary, and (ii) lower primary.
At this stage, pupils will be guided by their respective class teachers and correct all the
mistakes they made during the assembly.

6. MEASUREMENT

Judging is bound by strict criteria listed down on a piece of rubric. Pupils and teachers pay
careful attention to the following aspects on two aspectsof speech making:

a. Content (Subject Matter)


 Is the purpose stated clearly?
 Does the content organise?
 Does the speaker support ideas by giving examples?
 Does the speaker incorporates stories to interest the listeners?
 Does the speaker summarise his/her points?

b. Delivery (Use of plain English)


 Is the message or point of view conveyed in clear, correct, comprehensible and
appropriate language?
 Are tone, pace, pauses and projection effective?
 Is the speaker’s style confident, fluent and natural?
 Awkward pauses
 Conspicuous use of notes, reading, shuffling Palm cards
