PROCEDURE OF FIELD TESTING

EARTH SYSTEM TEST (Slope method)

Test Procedure
1. Set up the equipment as show in the Figure.1
2. Current spike is placed 50 meters or more from earth electrode system to be
measured and connected to Earth Meter ‘C2’ terminal.
3. Potential spike is inserted at test positions respectively, between the earth
system and the current spike.
4. The ‘C1’ and ‘P1’ terminals of Earth Meter are connected separately to
some point on the earth electrode system.
5. Note that the test spike and the earth system should all be in a straight line.

6. Suppose the distance from the earth electrode system to the current spike is
EC. The resistance from the Potential positions 0.2EC, 0.4EC and 0.6EC
can be found. These are called R1, R2 and R3 respectively. Calculate the
Slope coefficient ‘’ following formula.
R3  R2

R 2  R1
7. Find the value of ‘Pt’ (The distance to the potential electrode at the position
where the true resistance would be measured.) using to obtain the value of
‘Pt / EC’ from the table with ‘Slope method” in Megger DET 5/4D
manual’.
8. Multiply the value of ‘Pt / EC’ by EC to obtain the distance ‘Pt’( The
distance of true resistance)
9. Measure and record the true resistance of earth electrode system at ‘Pt’.
