Industrial Engineering

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Among all the streams of education, Engineering is the one which fascinated me from my school
days. While playing with my toys, I tried to know and understand how gears and other small
parts worked in them. My father used to bring home some robots and humanoids as he works in
a robotic education company. These robots had small servo motors and sensors which operated
on link mechanism. I used to play with them without knowing their mechanism. Only while
studying about gears in physics and mathematics, in school, I could properly understand the
mechanism behind these toys and robots. This persuaded me to choose mechanical engineering

My Undergraduate days are the most eventful years of my life till date. I gained strong
knowledge of core subjects like Mechanics, Kinematics, Thermodynamics, Material science and
Structural Analysis. It gave me opportunities to explore and pursue many of my bubbling
creative ideas. One among them resulted in getting selected to an 8 member team for
representing my college in a national level event called Efficycle. The theme of Efficycle 2012
was to promote “Green Technology”. We were selected for the finals out of 400 participating
teams. The judges were highly impressed with our innovative ideas in making the tricycle. The
experience gained while preparing for the competition taught us many things like managing time,
sourcing required parts, contacting corporate houses for funding the project, etc.
Apart from Efficycle, I enjoyed participating in quiz competitions and took part in some of the
best Auto Quiz competitions in South India, winning 3 first, 2 second and 3 third prizes.

Robotics is another subject which thrills me. I took part in “Robowars” 2012 conducted by SRM
College of Engineering and won 3rd place in the competition. I also took active part in our
college Quality Forum. This Forum enabled me to have wider understanding of Industrial
Quality Management, its principles and methodologies as adopted by the industries today. I was
also involved in other activity forums such as Event Manager of Sankhya - Mathematics Forum,
Event Organizer of Quality Forum and Event Organizer of Ignition – Mechanical Symposium.
All these helped me to groom my leadership qualities.

Every industry aims to achieve Six Sigma levels in their relative fields. I realized the importance
of Six Sigma and attended a 5-day workshop. After successfully completing the workshop I was
awarded the Six Sigma Green Belt. I am sure this knowledge will be of immense help to me not
only while pursuing masters but also when I start working in any industry. During my third year,
I presented a technical paper titled, “Experimental Investigation on the Machining behavior of
Diamond Insert on Turning AI6061 Alloy with 10% Reinforcement of B4C Particles" in the 2nd
International Conference on Mechanical, Automotive and Aerospace Engineering (ICMAAE
2013), held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 2nd to 4th July 2013. Theoretical studies and lab
experiments are not enough to gain wider knowledge of subjects. Hence I underwent an In-Plant
training program at “Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited” (TAFE), which is one of the best
agricultural equipment and tractors manufacturing companies in India, in the Private sector.
Similarly, I had the great opportunity to do an In-plant training program in “Hindustan
Aeronautics Limited” (HAL), in their Aero space Division, Bangalore. HAL is one of the best
Public Sector Companies of the Indian Government. These In-plant training programs gave me
the most exciting insights of big industries. I also underwent Internship training from EMPEE
Distilleries Ltd. Apart from college studies, these In-plant trainings and Internship enlightened
me about the fusion of engineering and business discipline. This is the time my determination to
pursue Industrial Engineering started to burgeon.

Apart from studies, I also took an active part in Leo club, which is a subsidiary of Lions
International, by organizing Blood donation camps, Orphanage and Old age home visits, Beach
cleaning activities and Tree plantations. All these activities opened my eyes to the real world and
Looking forward to my future plans, I realized that apart from Mechanical Engineering one has
to have overall knowledge and experience of engineering and business disciplines. Because it is
not only the manufacturing which roles out the final product or service, but all related activities
before, during and after manufacturing. This requires integrated management of people, finance,
time, creative planning, design, etc. My future ambition is to be a leader in one of the best
industries and finally become an entrepreneur. This resulted in my choosing Industrial

My search for the best University offering Industrial Engineering zeroed on Penn State
University. The glorious history of 100 years. The Department of Industrial Engineering was
found by Hugo Diemer, who coined the term Industrial Engineering and the University’s core
values attracted me to the University. Also the method of “Hands-on Education”, world class
research and the state of art facilities offered by the University are ideal for pursuing my M.S. in
Industrial Engineering from this University. I am hopeful that my overall performance in
schooling and under graduation will support my selection for this prestigious University. I
assure the University that, given an opportunity, I will live up to the expectations of the
University’s standard and uphold its reputation.
