Course Description:

Lessons and common assessments for this course have been developed collaboratively
using best practice as a guide and Indiana State Standards as a framework. Students will
have a mid-semester formative evaluation and final summative exam at the end of each
semester. The formative 9 weeks tests are designed primarily to inform instruction, giving
the teacher a measuring stick of the student’s understanding of the essential outcomes of
the course content. The Final exams are summative in nature and will be worth 20% of the
student’s overall grade.

High school health education provides the basis for continued methods of developing knowledge,
concepts, skills, behaviors, and attitudes related to student health and well-being. This course
includes the major content areas in a planned, sequential, comprehensive health education
curriculum as expressed in the Indiana Health Education Standards Guide: (1) Growth and
Development; (2) Mental and Emotional Health; (3) Community and Environmental Health; (4)
Nutrition; (5) Family Life; (6) Consumer Health; (7) Personal Health; (8) Alcohol, Tobacco, and
Other Drugs; (9) Intentional and Unintentional Injury; and (10) Health Promotion and Disease
Prevention.

Students are provided with opportunities to explore the effect of health behaviors on an
individual’s quality of life. This course assists students in understanding that health is a lifetime
commitment by analyzing individual risk factors and health decisions that promote wellness and
prevent disease. Students are also encouraged to assume individual responsibility for becoming
competent health consumers. A variety of instructional strategies, including technology, are used
to further develop health literacy.

Essential Outcomes:
1. Students will understand the function and anatomy of the major body systems.
2. Students will understand the importance of all area’s of the Health Triangle.
3. Students will understand the basics of a healthy diet & eating disorders.
4. Students will understand the risks of ATOD.
5. Students will develop basic knowledge of First Aid/CPR.
6. Students will understand the diseases associated with lifestyles and hereditary.
7. Students will understand the dangers of AIDS, HIV, & STD’s.
8. Students will have guest speakers on the following topics and understand the importance
of each:
 Cancer, Organ Donation, Drinking & Driving, SCAN, Dating Safety/Date Rape
Drugs, & Spinal Cord Injuries/Traumatic Brain Injuries

Student Evaluation:
Student grades will be figured with the following items weighted by percentage below.
18-week grade = Semester grade=

Late Work Policy:


If a student has an excused absence, they will be given the same number of days as the rest of
the class to complete the assignment. If the assignment was given prior to the absence, it is still
due upon their return.
If a student has an unexcused absence, ISS, OSS, or truancy all assignments, tests, quizzes,
and projects will follow CHS Policy.

Class Expectations:
1. Your grade and score in this class will represent the amount of learning that you achieve.
2. Be on time and ready to learn. Poor attendance will negatively affect your ability to earn a
passing grade in this class.
3. RESPECT yourself, peers, and school faculty at all times.
4. Honesty and Integrity is imperative. (see pg. 28, #15 of student handbook)

Classroom Rules:
1. Follow all school policies.
2. No Food, aluminum cans, glass bottles, or cups. Plastic bottles are OK to bring in.
3. Lap-top computers, tablets, and Ipad’s may be used at teachers discretion.
