Summative Assessment: Polynomials

Unit: Polynomials

CA State Standards for Polynomial Unit:

2.0: Students understand and use such operations as taking the
opposite, finding the reciprocal, taking a root, and raising to a
fractional power. They understand and use the rules of exponents.
10.0: Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide monomials and
polynomials. Students solve multistep problems, including word
problems, by using these techniques.
11.0: Students apply basic factoring techniques to second-and simple
third-degree polynomials. These techniques include finding a
common factor for all terms in a polynomial, recognizing the
difference of two squares, and recognizing perfect squares of
binomials.
14.0: Students solve a quadratic equation by factoring or completing
the square.
21.0: Students graph quadratic functions and know that their roots
are the x-intercepts.
23.0: Students apply quadratic equations to physical problems, such
as the motion of an object under the force of gravity.

Project Title: Polynomial Brochure

Project Directions:
Students will be paired to create a digital brochure to demonstrate
their understanding of the entire Polynomial Unit. The brochure
should have four sections; a cover page, a section for Monomials &
Polynomials, a section for Factoring, and a section for Quadratic &
Exponential Functions. Each section should include:

The Cover Page:

Include the student’s names and a brief description of the
Polynomial Unit.
Monomials & Polynomials:
Include a description of monomials with three examples.
Include a description of polynomials with three examples.

Factoring:
Include a brief description of factoring, as well as three
examples of factored monomials and three examples of
polynomials.

Quadratic & Exponential Functions:

Include the definition of Quadratic Functions and the definition
of Exponential Functions. This section should also include two
examples of Quadratic Functions with a graph of one of those
Quadratic Functions. It should also include two examples of
Exponential Functions with a graph of one of those Exponential
Functions.
