The Integration of Art and Music to Evoke Talent Diversity in School

In the advancement of our country, Malaysia which can be seen through the economies
transition stage that has been reported by Global Competitiveness Report 2017-2018 handbook,
it says that among Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries, Malaysia is at the
rank of 9th after United States, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, New Zealand, Canada,
Taiwan, and Australia and also ahead of Korea, Rep.,China, and Thailand. Hence, children
should have prepared in order to face a very challenging modern world for the future. Many
parties should be together in ‘grooming’ our young generation today to someone who can fits
just right to our future Malaysia. In order to do that, we need to have a powerful parties
supporting this intention which are, the children themselves, peers, parents and also school. I
would say school first as in Malaysia approximately a quarter of a child’s time from the ages
of seven to 17 is spent in school (Ministry of Education, 2015) which clearly shows why school
needs to hold a vital role in preparing children to face a very challenging modern world in the
future as they are the ones who always work closely to the kids to be compared with the other
parties.

One of the ways lay down by school is to have art and music in their curricula so that
children can be diverse in their talents to make sure they can compete along with the other
children in the future later. Talent can simply mean natural aptitude on something that other
people might not have. But as aligned by Human Resource on its page entitled “What does
talent mean in your context? 4 ways to define talent”, it views talent in every corner of aspects
such as, the ability to learn, evolve and adapt, the ability to create and innovate, delivery of
results effectively and efficiently: high-performing individuals and also potential (Kalra, n.d.).
We always get confuse of the differences between talent and skills which then lead us to the
main different of them which are, the talent is usually a gift from God while skills are usually
developed. When talking about the instance of these two, we can say that talent is just like how
people know how to sing and draw but skills are just like skill to build things and leadership
skills. Therefore, I am adamantly agreeing on children’s needs to have art and music in their
curricula so that children can be diverse in their talents and how much these talents can be
implemented and codified to our curriculum. The diversity of talents the children are going to
indulge are going to help students in seeking professional job opportunity, stimulating
children’s development and leading to an optimal satisfaction ones’ would achieve in a long
run.
First reason of why school should have art and music at school is because it helps the
children to have an opportunity for job requirements in the future. We can see the adventurous
world our youth are living in at the moment at our country where they are a lot of unemployed
graduated as stated by Trading Economics where unemployment Rate in Malaysia averaged
3.28 percent from 1998 until 2019. They choose to loaf around, make themselves busy with
their smart phones and gadgets rather than growing healthily by exploring the world around.
This is saddening where Malaysia’s role in providing job opportunities to the young generation
should be questioned in few more years. The hardest truth is, our young generation efforts in
enrolling themselves to the higher institution, is no longer a guarantee to a permanent job. This
alarming issue is actually happening because of many reasons such as outrageous salary
demands, poor character and attitude also bad command in English language (Leo, n.d.). With
the over flooding number of university graduates, they are expecting to stand up from the others
in order to place themselves amongst the best in the midst of job opportunity seeking.
Therefore, one of the ways to disguise ourselves from the others jobs seekers is to equip
ourselves with the talents others do not have.

The talents mentioned should be explored, dug up and expended since we were smalls
and should be discovered by our own self, school, also by our caregivers. It is kind of easy to
be acknowledged back before when they were not many youngsters who were compatible
enough to be qualified in particular career vacancy but now, we live amongst a population of
billions, it is like a need in today’s society to have at least one talent to help us compete with
the others in the job seeking war. Atleast having a rare talent would impress our potential
employers and will catch their interest towards us too. Besides, talent is not just a talent when
it can turn to a lucrative job and could be a profession if we put much focus and determination
on it. If the children are equipped with talents in art and music, they can either work somewhere
that acknowledge their talents indirectly or make money from their own talent. There are a lot
of artist and musicians who are remarkable and been idolize by everyone just because of their
talent even without a proper academic and a fix secure job just like P.Ramlee. They even earn
a lot out of talent that people might think not usable years before.

As we all know, not all children are blessed with an intelligent brain to become a doctor,
teacher, engineer and all that stable career. Some of them are blessed with a gifted hand who
can pick a guitar, a hand that become a handyman and also a graceful hand to draw. Hence, if
one day the children are not capable to pursue their studies in any advanced fields, they can
have their talent as a backup to still stand up on their own feet in the future later. One of the
ways to explore someone’s talent is by pushing them into their limit. The teacher can do this
by providing stimulus to the students and arise their interest to find and develop their talent and
potential. Instead of having the same talent all over again like debating talent, the teacher can
include the introduction to music and arts at school too to show to the students on how wide
talent is and it is not only academically confined. By that, students would have started to know
themselves more in the process of looking to their talent and start to exposed to many other
talents. Our music and art industry in this particular moment is always welcoming to our young
generation to try their luck as well as to help Malaysia gets its good name internationally.
Hence, the introduction made by school on music and arts to school are not something wasted
and the job opportunity would be the reason on its emphasize of this idea.

Secondly, the presence of arts and music talent to school can stimulate children’s
development. Those two talents are not solely put the children enjoyment in doing an exciting
activity, rather it brings much benefit that might be acquired consciously or subconsciously.
Immersing children in art can get them involve in motor skills, language development, decision
making, visual learning, inventiveness, culture awareness and also improving their
performance in academic (Grace, n.d.). Even at the early stage of holding a paintbrush or
scribbling with a crayon, are essential to the growth of fine motor skills in young children. On
the other hand, music also brings tons of benefit to the development of child’s mind. It effects
on the children’s mind, reading skills, listening skills and also improves on the concentration.
It is unbelievable to see a whole lot of benefits these two talents can foster which could
disseminate good vibes and mind construction. The benefits are acquired through the diversity
of talent branch process we can get from the art and music. The talent branch I meant here is
the talent ones could get out of the music and art. For example, art can produce someone who
has a talent in literature field including drama, poetry, prose or the performing art such as dance
and theatre. Someone who has talent in literature also can enjoy benefits of art in visual art
including drawing, painting, filmmaking, architecture, ceramics, sculpting and photography.
For those who are interested in music could also have talent in composing songs, singing,
instrument playing, starting up a band or orchestras. By having these music and art at school,
children will be able to pick any talent they wish to from a wide choices listed. Like mentioned
before, talent does not have to be any talent that related to academic.

The involvement in the talents mentioned are also something that would love to be
achieved by anyone especially for those who are really into it. As I put before on how talent
differ from skill is the way we acquire it and the talent we have is innate. However, talent also
can be learnt (Susan, n.d.). People with a great potential and also talent will have gone to zero
if there is no hard work in maintaining the talent. It will come to nothing. A popular theory is
that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at something, but if your genes give
you an aptitude for and enjoyment of chess, maths, music or football, you are surely more likely
to put in those long hours (Susan, n.d.). To conclude, it is true that art and music brings diversity
in talents which the process experience by the children will stimulate their mind development
in a long run.

Third reason why we should have art and music in our curricular to show the diversity
of talents is because of its positivity in giving the amount of satisfaction in ones’ lives.
According to the hierarchy of needs renowned by Abraham Maslow, we human are necessary
to achieve certain level of needs in order to pursue to another level of needs till we reach the
self-actualization level. Maslow believes human motivation is based on individual’s ability to
seek fulfilment and change through personal growth. Let’s say if the students have completed
the psychological, safety, and love or belonging from people around them, they now they need
a stimulus to confirm their self-esteem and using talents is one of the ways to achieve it. Our
gifts or talents are also considered as our strengths. Gallup conducted a research on people who
use their strengths every day and how it affects their performance and overall also to their
quality of life (Kaye, 2017). He also explains that Gallup found out people who utilize their
strengths and talents which something that comes naturally and can be enhanced through
practice too, in every day are six times more likely to be engaged on the job.

When the children have spent most of their time by practising their talent by showing
it to everyone, affecting other people’s life, making perpetual actions, being progress and also
expending experience, they will likely achieve the level of self-esteem in a whole. They will
feel overwhelmed, high self-esteem, confident, proud and feel respected by others which will
lead to a feeling of satisfactory. When the efforts are constantly given, the needs will become
the self-actualization where the children will achieve morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem
solving, lack of prejudice and also the acceptance of facts. Self-actualization refers to the need
for personal growth and development that exists throughout your life. If the children work hard
to grow and become who they want to be in their life which is related to their talent and will
have reached to their full potential (Saul, 2018). Thus, the presence of art and music as a talent
development can be a medium to achieve the full needs coined by Abraham Maslow. Not only
that, the children will also make use of the self-actualization characters they have gained, try
to apply throughout their life one day to help them survive in this big world.
In order to make sure we can implement these talents discovery and the introduction to
other diversity of talents towards children, we need to have an effective procedure to make sure
each one of students could benefit from it. One of the best ways is to codify talents into one of
compulsory subjects in school. The subject here does not mean it is something the same as any
formal teaching and learning where students sit and there is a teacher hosting the class. It is
more to students-centred where the students themselves explore and widen their talent. The
teachers and school’s roles are important here to make sure students could identify their talents
in a particular period of time, track their progress and also provide any support needed by the
students. The school can also help by initialling a workshop, talk, forum, exhibition and talent
show that can trigger their interest in any talents they see. Besides, the talent discovery journey
can also be inserted in one of the curriculum module. Instead of having a uniform and sports,
they can also spend of some allocation of time per week to sit with their pears who share the
same interest in them. This evoke their idea sharing, peer guiding, support system and will
therefore, giving the positive influence from one another.

The school can initiate their idea of opening as many clubs as they can to make sure the
students should not feel leave out which will discourage their interested in talents. We have
heard before on a program called “1 Murid, 1 Sukan” which was coined by Dato’ Seri Najib
Bin Abdul Razak in 2012 (Norhazuren, n.d.) where one student is compulsory to at least
participate in any one sport at school which is aimed to strive for 1 Malaysia aspiration which
is to foster health, efficient, dynamic and unity. The same concept can be adopted and adapted
here where we can initiate such programme where students are provided that kind of channel
to inhibit and show their talents to the worlds. The school also needs to ready the school with
a proper equipment needed for the students to expend their talent. It does not mean the big
sums of money is needed here to make it possible. For example, the music and art talent clubs
are going to need a lot of money for the budget allocation and so on, but at least a small effort
is enough to show that the school is concerned with whatever talent they do have rather than a
zero effort. It is easier to say than to be done, but these kinds of effort mentioned will benefit
to the students and nation in a long run.

In a nutshell, I am strongly agree with the integration of arts and music in the curricular
so student would have a diversity of talents because that will enable them to find job
opportunity, to stimulate their development and also will lead to an optimal satisfactions in
their life. Not to forget, all various parties such as teacher, school and community play the
equal big role to mould children’s talent especially at their early age as the proverb says, united
we stand, divided we fall. The effort in this context puts emphasize and highlight on the school
and teacher as the idea suggested should be applied in the school wall with the involvement of
teachers and school. The discovery of talent at the early age could help the children optimizing
their potential to the maximum by exercising it hundreds of time and make it a permanence
talent that lies beneath our bodies. I really hope that all children can have their time, enough of
couragement and support to keep discover their self-potential which could make them stand
out from the others and also as a solid preparation to face a challenging world later.
