The narrative report summarizes a School Learning Action Cell (SLAC) session about the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST). The resource speaker discussed how the PPST, signed into policy in 2017, establishes the standards that teachers are expected to meet to grow in their profession. The 12 modules in the resource package correspond to the 12 PPST indicators and are aligned with the Results-based Performance Management System. As teachers of literacy and numeracy, it is important to provide a range of contexts for students to use these skills across the curriculum. The goal is to give children quality instruction to help them succeed in life.

Narrative Report Topic: “PHILIPPINE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS FOR TEACHERS” Date: January 11, 2019
The 3rd SLAC session was all about Philippine
Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST). The resource speaker started the session with a prayer and then followed by the checking of attendance. Right after that, she introduced and discussed to us her topic. Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) signed by our Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones into policy through DepEd Order No. 42, S. 2017 last August 2017. The policy states, among others, that the PPST “shall be used as a basis for all learning and development programs for teachers.” As a teacher, understanding the PPST is crucial in order for us to grow and flourish in our profession. The PPST identifies what we are expected to know, be able to do, and value our profession. This resource package serves as our guidebook towards becoming better acquainted with the PPST. It comprises 12 modules corresponding to the 12 indicators that are aligned with the Results-based Performance Management System (RPMS). One of which is use a range of teaching strategies that enhance learner achievement in literacy and numeracy skills. Literacy is not just about learning to read and write. It is necessary in order to learn any subject at school. Similarly, numeracy is more than counting numbers. Both skills are at interplay in the holistic performance of our learners. As teachers of literacy and numeracy across the curriculum, we should provide our learners a range of different contexts in which they can use these skills. We all have the responsibility to promote these skills in our classroom. In all levels and curriculum areas, we should explore the possibilities of extending and complementing numeracy and literacy. We should give our children quality instruction so that they can have the best chances to succeed in life.
