1. Find a parametric equation of the line passing through the points A (2,3,-1) and
B (4,-3,2).
Solution :

𝒙 − 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔

𝑥 = 2 + (4 − 2)𝑡

𝑥 = 2 + 2𝑡

𝒚 – 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔

𝑦 = 3 + (−3 − 3)𝑡

𝑦 = 3 − 6𝑡

𝒛 – 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔

𝑧 = −1 + (2 − (−1))𝑡

𝑧 = −1 + 3𝑡
ANSWERS

𝑥 = 2 + 2𝑡

𝑦 = 3 – 6𝑡

𝑧 = −1 + 3𝑡

2. Find a vector equation for the line that joints point A (1,-1,2) and B (4,1,7).
Vector equation 𝑟(𝑡) = (−2 + (4 − 1)𝑡 , 1 + (1 + 1) , 2 + (7 − 2)𝑡 )

= (−2 + 3𝑡 , 1 + 2𝑡 , 2 + 5𝑡)

(−2 + 3𝑡)𝑖 + (1 + 2𝑡)𝑗 + (2 + 5𝑡)𝑘

3. Sketch the graph for the following vector-valued functions.

a) 𝒓 = (𝟏 − 𝒕)𝒊 + 𝒕𝒋 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝟎 ≪ 𝒕 ≪ 𝟏

𝑥 = 1−𝑡 ( -1, 1 ) ( 1, 0 )

𝒚 = 𝟏 − 𝒙  𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑐
b) 𝒓 = 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒕 𝒊 + 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒕 𝒋 + 𝒕𝒌 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝟎 ≪ 𝒕 ≪ 𝟏

𝑥(𝑡) = cos 𝑡

𝑦(𝑡) = sin 𝑡

𝑧(𝑡) = 𝑡

𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝑡 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝑡 = 1

𝑡 = 0, (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (1, 0, 0)

𝑡 = 𝜋⁄2 , (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (0, 1, 𝜋⁄2 )

𝑡 = 𝜋, (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (−1, 0, 𝜋)

𝑡 = 3𝜋⁄2 , (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (0, −1, 3𝜋⁄2)

𝑡 = 2𝜋, (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (1, 0, 2𝜋)

4. Find a vector-valued function that represents the curve of intersection of the
cylinder 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏 and the plane 𝒚 + 𝒛 = 𝟐

𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 1

𝑦+𝑧=2

Since 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 1 is a vertical cylinder centred at origin and radius √1 , the plane parametric
equation for the vector-valued 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 2 cylinder fuction is :

𝑥 = √1 cos 𝑡

𝑦 = √1 sin 𝑡

𝑟(𝑡) = 𝑥𝑖 + 𝑦𝑗 + 𝑧𝑘

= (√1 cos 𝑡 )𝑖 + (√1 sin 𝑡 )𝑗 + (2 − √1 sin 𝑡) 𝑘, 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 2𝜋
