What is SIL 2 Certification

all about?
A SIL is a numeric designator assigned
to a safety system that indicates that
system’s ability to perform its safety
function. The SIL 2 TYPE certification of
ControlLogix programmable automation
controller (PAC) by TÜV, an internationally
recognized and accredited test laboratory
certification center, assures the suitability
of ControlLogix products for use in safety
applications up to and including SIL 2.
TÜV certification is based primarily on
compliance with IEC 61508 “Functional
Safety of Electrical/Electronic/
Programmable Electronic Safety-Related
Systems” requirements. It also includes
a number of application-independent
standards, IEC-61511 Functional Safety
Safety Instrumented Systems for the
process sector DIN V 19250 and VDE
0801, application-dependent standards,
prEN 50156 for ESD applications, DIN
EN 54 for fire and gas application, and
environmental and electrical safety
standards, IEC 61131-2, EN 50178, EN
50081-2, and EN 61000-2:2000. Rockwell
Automation has obtained a TYPE
approval and certification from TÜV.
Easier to Use:
The new certified ControlLogix with termination boards and software
extends the fault tolerance down to the I/O level. New configurable
software makes the system easier to use as the software routines provide
the pre-developed logic for diagnostics, comparison, alarming and
other functions identified in the safety manual. These routines are now
encapsulated, transparent and are configurable. Previously, you
had to write these programs.
• E xtends the fault tolerance to the I/O. The previous system with
the redundancy module provided fault tolerant only to the controllers.
• T he fault tolerant ControlLogix provides very high levels of availability
for those customers that cannot tolerate an unwanted safety system
shutdown
• Certified by the TüV Rheinland adding credibility and assurance.

Sophisticated diagnostics and high levels of reliability are standard
design in ControlLogix controllers, I/O modules, and communication
products. It is that same, standard design that readily provides the
reliability needed to achieve SIL 2 certification.
