Topic: Verbals

When a verb acts as another part of speech in a sentence, so it called verbal. It has
two types:
1. Gerund: (answers what questions)
It is an –ing form of the verb that acts as noun. It is also called verbal noun.
e.g Reading is his hobby.
He likes swimming.
2. Participle: (answers which questions)
A form of verb that acts as an adjective in a sentence. It is also called verbal
adjective. It has two types:
a) Present Participle (1st form+ing)
It is an –ing form of the verb that cats as an adjective. e.g
I read interesting novel.
b) Past Participle: (3rd form)
It is the 3rd form of the verb that acts as an adjective. e. g
i. The broken vase was replaced.
ii. The kidnapped child was found.
Exercise: - Identify gerund and participles.
1. We discourage smoking. (gerund)
2. The people were quickly evacuated from the burning building. (Pr. participle)
3. He was arrested for driving fast. (gerund)
4. Let sleeping dogs lie. (gerund)
5. We shall not tolerate such a shocking behaviour. (Pr. participle)
6. His favourite hobby, jogging keeps him fit. (gerund)
