that in the year before the beginning of the Peloponnesian War, an
Athenian force which had been employed against Perdiccas marched in
three days from Berrhoea to Gigonus, from whence they proceeded against
Potidaea . Gigonus, therefore, was not more than an ordinary day's march
from Potidcea, which can hardly be said of Karaburnu;
of the promontory where JEneias founded hi9 city I cannot learn, indeed,
that the Frank merchants or consuls, many of whose country houses are on

the formidable inhabitants of Mount Cissus enumerated by Xenophon,

can conceive to have been the haunt of those animals. That the town

contributed, together with Aeneia and Chalastra, to people Thessalonica3.

The island was near the west coast of Rhodes, and probably subject to
Rhodes. G. L.] CHALCIDEIS. [CHALcitis, No. 2. CHALCIDICE (h
XaAkiölkh, 1°tol. iii. 13. § l l ; Eth. and Adj. XaAkıöets), the name applied
to the whole of the great peninsula, lying southward of the ridge of Mt.
Cissus (Khortiatzi), between the Thermaic and Strymonic Gulf. It
terminates in three prongs, running out into the Aegaean Sea, called
respectively Acte, Sithonia, and Pallene, the first being the most easterly,
and the latter the most westerly. The peninsula of Acte, which terminates
with Mt. Athos, rising out of the sea precipitously to the height of nearly
6,400 feet, is rugged, and clothed with forests, which leave only a few spots
suitable for cultivation. [Athos.] The Middle or Sithonian peninsula
(Xitavia : Longos), is also hilly and woody, though in a less degree. The
peninsula of Pallene ( : Kassándhra), was pre-eminent for its rich and
highly cultivated territory. The gulf between Acte and Sithonia was called
the Singitic, and that between Sithonia and Pallene the Toronaic or
Mecybernacan. It inust be recollected that the original Chalcidice, though
the name has been extended in consequence of the influence which the
people of the Chalcidic race enjoyed during the meridian period of Grecian
history, did not comprehend Crossaea, nor the districts of Acanthus and
Stageirus, colonies of Andrus, nor that of Potidaea, a colony of Corinth,
nor even Olynthus or the territory around it to the N., which was occupied
by a people who had been driven out of Bottiaeis W. of the Lydias in the
early times of the Macedonian monarchy. The principal possession of the
Chalcidian settlers from Euboea (Strab. x. p. 447) in the earliest time of
their migration, probably in the 7th century b.c., seems to have been the
Sithonian headland, with its port and fortress Torone; from thence they
extended their power inland, until at length they occupied the whole of
Mygdonia to the S. of the ridges which stretched W. from the mountain
range at the head of the Singitic gulf (Vīzvoro) together with Crossaea.
Artabazus, on his return from the Hellespont, having reduced Olynthus,
together with some other places which had revolted from Xerxes, slew all
the Bottiaei who had garrisoned Olynthus, and gave up the place to the
Chalcidians. We find the Bottiaei joined, on two occasions, with the
Chalcidians as allies (Thuc. i. 65, ii. 79), and one of their silver coins with
44
the legend Bottiaiww is precisely similar, both in type and fabric, to those
of the Chalcidians, impressed with the head of Apollo and his lyre (comp.
Eckhel, vol. ii. p. 70). At the instigation of Perdiccas, the Chalcidians made
war upon the Athenians who held Potidaea and other towns in their
neighbourhood, and were successful in more than one engagement (Thuc.
ii. 79). Brasidas was indebted to their cooperation for his first successes
(Thuc. iv. 83), and it was to his expedition into Thrace that the Chalcidian
republics owed their final independence. (Thuc. v. 18.) After the
Peloponnesian war, in consequence of the complaints of the Apollonians
of Chalcidice and Acanthians, the Lacedaemonians sent an army against
Olynthus, which, after losing two of its commanders, succeeded in the 4th
campaign (b. c. 379) in reducing the city to submission (Xen. Hell. v. 8).
The history of Chalcidice, after the supremacy which Olynthus obtained
over its other towns, follows the fortunes of that city. [OLYNThus.]
Ptolemy (l.c.) divides the whole peninsula into two parts, Chalcidice and
Paralia (for so the word which appears as Paraxia in the printed copies
should be read). Paralia contained all the maritime country between the bay
of Thessalonica, and Derrhis, the Cape of Sithonia: thus the W. coast of
Sithonia was at that time included in Parasia and the E. in Chalcidice,
together with Acanthus, the entire peninsula of Acte, and all the coast land
in the Strymonic gulf as far N. as Bromiscus, with the exception of
Stageira. An account of the different Chalcidian towns will be found under
the separate heads; beginning from the W. they are AENE1A near the cape,
which marks the entrance of the inner Thermaic gulf, Grooxcs, AN
rigoxE1A and PotidAEA. Between these towns lay the territory called
Cross AEA. In Pallene were the towns of SAxE, MENDE, Scion E, Tirer
AMBos, AEGE, NEApolls, APHYTIs, either wholly or partly colonies
from Eretria. In Sithonia were MecyBERNA, SERMYLE, GALEPsus,
Tokoxe, SARTE, SINGcs, Priorus, Assa, all or most of them of Chalcidian
origin. At the head of the Toronaic gulf in the interior of Chalcidice lay
hood of which at the village of Heusn Nieha, are some remarkable remains
(comp. Chesney, Erped. Euphrat, vol. i. p. 472). Or perhaps at Majdel
Anjar, where Abū-l-féda (Tab. Syr. p. 20) speaks of great ruins of hewn
stones. (Robinson, Biblioth. Sacr. vol. v. p. 90). [E. B. J.] CHALCIS
(XaAkss : Eth. XaAkiöets, Chalcidensis). 1. (Egripo, Negropont), the chief
town of Euboea, separated from the opposite coast of Boeotia by the narrow
strait of the Euripus, which is at this spot only 40 yards across. The Euripus
is here divided into two channels by a rock in the middle of the strait. This
rock is at present occupied by a square castle; a stone bridge, 60 or 70 feet
in length, connects the Boeotian shore with this castle; and another wooden
bridge, about 35 feet long, reaches from the castle to the Euboean coast. In
antiquity also, as we shall presently see, a bridge also connected Chalcis
with the Boeotian coast. The channel between the Boeotian coast and the
45
rock is very shallow, being not more than three feet in depth; but the
channel between the rock and Chalcis is about seven or eight feet in depth.
It is in the latter channel that the extraordinary tides take place, which are
frequently mentioned by the ancient writers. According to the common
account the tide changed seven times in the day, and seven times in the
night; but Livy states that there was no regularity in the change, and that
the flux and reflux constantly varied, - a phaenomenon which he ascribes
to the sudden squalls of wind from the mountains. (Strab. x. p. 403; Mela,
ii. 7; Plin. ii. 97; Cic. de Nat. Deor. iii. 10; Liv. xxviii. 6.) An intelligent
modern traveller observes that “at times the water runs as much as eight
miles an hour, with a fall under the bridge of about l, feet; but what is most
singular is the fact, that vessels lying 150 yards from the bridge are not in
the least affected by this rapid. It remains but a short time in a quiescent
state, changing its direction in a few minutes, and almost immediately
resuming its velocity, which is generally from four to five miles an hour
either way, its greatest raHidity being however always to the southward.
The results of three months' observation, in which the above phaenomena
were noted, afforded no sufficient data for reducing them to any
regularity.” (Penny Cyclopaedia, vol. x. p. 59.) Chalcis was a city of great
antiquity, and continued to be an important place from the earliest to the
latest times. It is said to have been founded before the Trojan war by an
Ionic colony from...
north of Hamburgh. Its exact site, however, is unknown. (Ptol. ii. 11. § 27.)
[L. S.] LIRIS (Aeipts : Garigliano), one of the principal rivers of central
Italy, flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea a little below Minturnae. It had its
source in the central Apennines, only a few miles from the Lacus Fucinus,
of which it has been sometimes, but erroneously, regarded as a
subterranean outlet. It flows at first in a SE. direction through a long
troughlike valley, parallel to the general direction of the Apennines, until
it reaches the city of Sora, where it turns abruptly to the SW., and pursues
that course until after its junction with the Trerus or Sacco, close to the site
of Fregellae: from thence it again makes a great bend to the SE., but
ultimately resumes its SW. direction before it enters the sea near
Minturnae. Both Strabo and Pliny tell us that it was originally called Clanis,
a name which appears to have been common to many Italian rivers
[CLANIs]: the former writer erroneously assigns its sources to the country
of the Vestini; an opinion which is adopted also by Lucan. (Strab. v. p. 233;
Lucan. ii. 425.) The Liris is noticed by several of the Roman poets, as a
very gentle and tranquil stream (Hor. Carm. i. 31.8; Sil. Ital. iv. 348),—a
character which it well deserves in the lower part of its course, where it is
described by a modern traveller as “a wide and noble river, winding under
the shadow of poplars through a lovely vale, and then gliding gently
towards the sea.” (Eustace's Classical Tour, vol. ii. p. 320.) But nearer its
source it is a clear and rapid mountain river, and at the village of Isola,
about four miles below Sora, and just after its junction with the Fibrenus,
it forms a cascade of above 90 feet in height, one of the most remarkable
waterfalls in Italy. (Craven's Abruzzi, vol. i. p. 93.) The Liris, which is still
called Liri in the upper part of its course, though better known by the name
of Garigliano, which it assumes when it becomes a more considerable
stream, has a course altogether of above 60 geographical miles: its most
considerable tributary is the Trerus or Sacco, which joins it about three
miles below Ceprano. A few miles higher up it receives the waters of the
Fibrenus, so celebrated from Cicero's description (de Leg. ii. 3); which is,
however, but a small stream, though remarkable for the clearness and
beauty of its waters. [FIBRENUs.] The Melfis (Melfit), which joins it a few
miles below the Sacco, but from the opposite bank, is equally
inconsiderable. At the mouth of the Liris near Minturinae, was an extensive
sacred grove consecrated to Marica, a nymph or local divinity, who was
represented by a tradition, adopted by Virgil, as mother of Latinus, while
others identified her with Circe. (Virg. Aen. vii. 47; Lactant. Inst. Div. i.
21.) Her grove and temple (LUcus MARICAE : Mapskas & Aros, Plut.
Mar. 39) were not only objects of great veneration to the people of the
neighbouring town of Minturnae, but appear to have enjoyed considerable
celebrity with the Romans themselves. (Strab. v. p. 233; Liv. xxvii. 37;
Serv. ad Aen. vii. 47.) Immediately adjoining its mouth was an extensive
47
marsh, formed probably by the stagnation of the river itself, and celebrated
in history in connection with the adventures of Marius. [E. H. B.] LISAE
(Aida), a town of Crusis or Crossaea, in Macedonia, mentioned only by
Herodotus (vii. 123). [CRUsis.] LISINAE, a town of Histiaeotis, in
Thessaly, on the borders of Athamania. (Liv. xxxii. 14.) LISSA. [JAccrr
ANI.] LISSA (Airga, Procop. B. G. i. 7; Itin. Anton.), an island off the coast
of Illyricum, placed by Pliny (iii.30) over against Iadera. Uglian, noted for
its marbles, and an island which obtained a momentary importance during
the wars of the Venetians, represents Lissa. (Wilkinson, Dalmatia and
Montenegro, vol. i. p. 78.) [E. B. J.] LISSUS. [LEoNTINI.] LISSUS
(Airgos, Ptol. iii. 17. § 3), a town on the S. coast of Crete, which the
anonymous Coastdescriber places between Suia and Calamyde.
(Stadiasm.) The Peutinger Table gives 16 M. P. as the distance between
Cantanum and Liso. This Cretan city was an episcopal see in the time of
Hierocles. (Comp. Cornel. Creta Sacra, vol. i. p. 235.) The order in which
he mentions it with the other bishoprics in the W. part of the island agrees
very well with the supposition that its site was on the spot now called
Hāghio Kyrko. This place occupies a small hollow of the hills facing the
sea, like a theatre. Near the church of the Panaghia are what appear to be
vestiges of an ancient temple, consisting of granite columns, and white
marble fragments, architraves, and pediments. Further on, appears to have
been another temple, and a theatre. The tombs are on the SW. side of the
plain. They are worked independent of the rock, with arched roofs. There
are perhaps fifty of them. (Pashley, Trav. vol. ii. p. 88; Mus. Class. Ant.
vol. ii. p. 298.) Of all the towns which existed on this part of the coast,
Lissus alone seems to have struck coins, a fact which agrees very well with
the evidence supplied by its situation, of its having been a place of some
trading importance. The harbour is mentioned by Scylax (p. 18), and the
types of the coins are either maritime, or indicative of the worship of
Dictynna, as might have been expected on this part of the island The
obverse of one coin bears the impress of the caps and stars of the Dioscuri,
and its reverse a quiver and arrow. On the second coin the caps and stars
are replaced by a dolphin, and instead of the quiver a female head, probably
that of Artemis or Dictynna.
in Greece ([67*], pp. 27, 239, 240, 524). Herodotus also uses the term
Crossaea ([67*], pp. 345, 408, 344). These numerous indications are
unwillingly associated with the "Crusaders" ...
After leaving the canal the fleet entered the Bay of Singus, now called
the Gulf of Monte Santo, on which were situated the cities of Assa, Pilorus,
Singus, and Sarta. Having taken troops on board from these cities, the fleet
doubled the Toronaean foreland of Ampelus, and passed by the following
Hellenic cities, viz. Torone, Galepsus, Sermyle, Mecyberna, and Olynthus;
and from thence took both ships and men. The district in which these places
lay was called Sithonia.3 The fleet then stretched from Cape Ampelus to
Cape Canastraeum, the most prominent point of all Pallene, which was
anciently called Phlegra. Pallene contained the cities of Potidaea, Aphytis,
Neapolis, Aega, Therambus, Scione, Menda, and Sana, from all of which
the Persians collected both men and ships. Coasting along the country
called Crossaea, they collected men from the cities of Lipaxus, Combrea,
Lisae, Gigonus, Monte Santo western end, a good watering-place for
shipping. The distance across the isthmus is 2500 yards, which agrees very
well with the breadth of 12 stadia assigned by Herodotus. The width of the
canal appears to have been about 18 or 20 feet. The level of the earth
nowhere exceeds 15 feet above the sea. The soil is a light clay. It is on the
whole a very remarkable isthmus, for the land on each side, but more
especially to the westward, rises abruptly to an elevation of 800 to 1000
feet." Pen. Cyclop. Herodotus (vii. 24) considers that Xerxes performed
this laborious work from motives of mere ostentation, for the ships might
have been easily drawn across the isthmus. Col. Leake however says, that
there can be no doubt that even now this canal, which might be renewed
without much labour, would be useful to the navigation of the Aegean,—
"for such is the fear entertained by the Greek boatmen of the strength and
uncertain direction of the currents around Mount Athos, and of the gales
and high seas to which the vicinity of the mountain is subject during half
the year, that I could not, as long as I was on the peninsula, and though
offering a high price, prevail upon any boat to carry me from the eastern
side of the peninsula to the western.... The circumnavigation of the Capes
Ampelus and Canastraeum was much less dangerous." North. Greece, vol.
iii. p. 145. 1 vii. 37. * vii. 22—24. » vii. 122.Campsa, Smila, and Aenea.

Bottiaeis. On a narrow part of Bottiaeis near the sea stood the cities of
Ichnae and Pella.1Herodotus also mentions a few particulars in connexion
with some of these localities. The Ther- °"lf °f mian Gulf, he says, derives
its name from the city of Therma.2 Olynthus was formerly occupied by
oijnthn*. Bottiaeans, who had been driven from the Thermaic Gulf by the
Macedonians. Artabazus took the town and slaughtered the garrison in a
neighbouring marsh, and then gave the place to the Chalcidian people.3

ebbing of the sea, and the besiegers seeing the shallows attempted to
proceed round the city.4 When, however, they had accomplished two-fifths
of the way, a strong flood-tide came upon them, such as, the inhabitants
say, was never seen before, though floods were frequent. All who could
not swim perished, whilst the Potidacans put out in boats and slew many
