Lesson 1.2 - Inquiry Learning (Cont.

) & Introduction to WISE

Time Allotted: 40 - 50 minutes

*NOTE: Students must have a valid email address before this lesson, it’s required for creating a WISE account.

Learning Objective(s) Inquiry Question: What is heat? How can we make use of the WISE program to learn
about heat?

By the end of this lesson students will be able to...

● Use a modified ‘KWL Chart’ to work through the inquiry-based learning
process.
● Sign in to and navigate the web-based inquiry science environment (WISE)
● Use the basic features of the WISE platform.

Main Tasks Review Modified KWL Chart (~5-10 minutes)

Students will complete the Modified KWL Chart activity.
50-60 minutes 1. Share: Students will share one idea about heat. Discuss sources of
information, are they reliable? Share any further questions students
generated. Do they have any hypotheses or ideas to test them?

Introduction to the Web-enhanced Inquiry Science Environment (~40 minutes)

Students will registered for and explore the digital features found in WISE.
Depending on the number of devices available in your classroom, additional ‘activity
stations’ may need to be set up in order to accomodate this process.
Since this process will take time, some students can register for WISE, while other
students can work on other class materials.
Students will be divided into three groups, and assigned to either station 1, 2, or 3 to
begin (‘Station 4 - Teaching’ should be left empty for the first round). Station signs
are included in Appendix 1.2A.
1. Station 1 - Activity 1: This can be an inquiry activity (see samples below) or
any other activity that you choose.
2. Station 2 - Activity 2: This can be an inquiry activity (see samples below) or
any other activity that you choose.
3. Station 3 - Registering: T he teacher will walk through the registration
process and WISE features orientation with the first group of students at this
station. In subsequent rounds, students will work in pairs to learn from their
peer teachers at Station 4.
4. Station 4 - Teaching: Note that this station will be empty during the first
round. During the second round, the students (who were previously at
station 3) will work in pairs to guide other students during the registration
process. The teacher should remain close by to monitor and be ready to help
when registration issues arise.
Each round of registration and orientation should take about 10 minutes. Students
should rotate through the stations in this order (Figure 1) until all students have
registered.

Extension Students can create instructional materials or create an advertisement for WISE.

Differentiate support & Students with high learning needs – Provide 1:1 support when students are
Scaffolding strategies registering and exploring the WISE.

Proficient learners – Allot sufficient time for exploration and clearly explain about
the expectations and goals in this WISE inquiry project.

Extending proficient learners – Students can create critique about the WISE program
and how it influences learning.
