Axisymmetric Problems

Q1. A hollow circular thick cylinder of inner and outer radii, 𝑎 and 𝑏 ,
respectively is subjected to an internal pressure, 𝑝$ , while the outer surface is
fixed to a rigid wall. (a) Derive a differential equation satisfying all the elasticity
equations, in terms of radial displacement, 𝑢& . (b) Find the stress, strain and
displacement fields assuming plane stress condition.

Q2. A steel cylinder of outside diameter 180 mm is shrunk on to a tungsten

carbide liner of outside diameter 60 mm and wall thickness 7.5 mm. If the
stress in the liner is to remain compressive when an internal pressure of 110
MPa is applied to it, what must be the initial circumferential stress due to
interference at the inside surface of the liner? Assume plane stress
conditions. For tungsten carbide, 𝐸 = 600 GPa, 𝜈 = 0. 21 ; for steel, 𝐸 =
210 GPa, 𝜈 = 0. 3.
