Commitment to the Profession F D C B A

Comments:

- Very good comments given by MST. But this is Mariam’s first time teaching so I will have to ask again
about Mariam’s preparation, planning and professionalism.

Planning for Learning F D C B A

Comments:
- Lesson plan is well written; simply edit spelling even more carefully. Also, please not that you must
write your reflection AFTER the lesson has been taught!
- Mariam planned and created the resources. Overall, very good.
- Mariam does a very good job supporting students during the center activities
- Next time, try to plan an opening and/or a closing that is even more creative, more fun and engaging

Managing Learning F D C B A
Comments:
- Mariam does a good job directing students to their centres
- Next time, Mariam will be expected to use her MST’s strategies without her MST’s support (eg. she
must know to use the ‘hands on head’ strategy and she must initiate it herself)
- Students listen to Mariam and follow her instructions 😊
- Stars take a long time to distribute. Consider speaking to students during this ‘quiet time’ (eg. you can
give students praise)…. Consider making them say something, answer questions or repeat something
In other words, just making use of this time to support language development (either speaking or
listening)

Implementing Learning F D C B A
Comments:
- “What did we learn in Math before today?”, says Mariam. Introduction is well managed.
- Mariam starts off very confident and enthusiastic. Good😊
- She announces the Learning Outcome – excellent.
- Mariam gives instructions/explanations rather quickly, and engages the students via questions
- Giving instructions constitutes an excellent opportunity for language development. Hence, try to take
a bit more time giving instructions and:
. emphasize target vocabulary words with students
. have students repeat instructions, key words, sentences in order to support language development

See back
- Consider modelling the activity that targets the ‘lower group’. This will help low ability students have
a clearer idea about the required task (some ‘low level’ students were somewhat confused).
- Mariam ensures that students have all the resources they need. She manages materials very well.
- Closing: when questioning students, make sure that you ask higher level questions. For instance, your
MST reminded you to ask the student “Why do you say that this one is bigger? How do you know?”
Your MST also reminded you to ask varied questions and numerous questions to get students to
think, and to get students to SPEAK!!

- Mariam has a good manner with KG students. She must simply spend more time teaching them in
order to become even more comfortable in front of the class. This will help improve her questioning
and her spoken interactions with students.

- A few language errors were heard. For example: “she draw the stars” (should say “she drew the
stars”)

Assessment F D C B A
Comments:

- Mariam monitored the students very closely during the student-centered activity
- In her reflection (after the lesson) Mariam did point out that she had noticed the fact that several students in
the ‘lower ability’ group had struggled a bit with the task. Great observation: now you can be pro-active with
this group next time!

Reflection on Practice F D C B A
Comments:

- Mariam was able to self-reflect on her lesson in a very astute manner.

- She listed most of her strengths and weaknesses (before I did!) and she was able to analyse this lesson within
its context (eg. like me, she also noticed that many of the areas for development simply have to do with the
fact that this was her first time teaching the entire class).

Action Plan:
-Overall, Mariam did a very good job. She needs to teach more in order to become even more comfortable and
more expressive (ie. at the KG level).
- Don’t forget: try to plan a more creative opening (and/or closing activity) for Observations 2 and 3.
- Next steps: see all comments in red (above)

- Am looking forward to seeing your progress Mariam!! 😊😊
