Lesson Idea Name: I Declare!

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 8th
Content Standard Addressed: SS8H3 Analyze the role of Georgia in the American Revolutionary
Era. b. Interpret the three parts of the Declaration of Independence (preamble, grievances, and
declaration) and identify the three Georgia signers of the document.

Technology Standard Addressed: 5- Computational Thinker

Selected Technology Tool: Scratch

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will be engaged in group work that will allow them to work together and participate in
useful collaboration
Representation: Using the representation UDL principle, students will be able to access Scratch app through
computers or Ipads used in class.
Action and Expression: Students will be able to express themselves in creative ways.

Lesson idea implementation:

At the start of the class students will watch the following coding project:
https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/14166641/
This will give students an idea of how their finished coding project may be
Students will then gather into groups of two or three.
Students will get on the computer and research the three parts of the Declaration of Independence and the three
signers.
They will create a script explaining their findings from their research.
They will use the Scratch app to create their finished project.

Importance of technology: The coding tool was important for the lesson because it gives students a creative
way of creating a final project. This tool is useful because it engages students in a way that can be only be
done using specific technology tools.

I would have my students create a product modeling the developed of the one shown
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: The Coding project used in this was reviewed by the teacher, so it avoids
many privacy issues and it is ensured to be appropriate for the student. The best way to minimize the risk in
the creation and the use of the video used it to make sure that all content used is copyright free.
Coding and Computational Thinking

Reflective Practice: A great way to increase student learning in this lesson would be to have students share
their creations with each other. This will allow students to have a greater motivation for doing their best
work.
