Before class, make one copy of the dominoes for each group of three and cut as indicated.
Procedure
Tell the students that they are going to build a conversation between a shop assistant and a
customer by matching sentence halves. Explain that all the sentences are common shopping
phrases.
Demonstrate the activity by writing the beginning of a shopping phrase on the board and
next to it write three possible endings.
Example:
…do you take?
Would you like to… …a credit card?
…try it on?
Next, divide the students into groups of three. (Students can also play in pairs if need be.)
Tell the students to shuffle the dominoes and then share them out equally.
Instruct the students not to show their dominoes to anyone in their group.
The player with the card ‘Hello, can I...’ puts down that domino to start the game.
The next player then tries to put down a domino which matches either side of the first
domino.
If a player doesn’t have a match, they have to pass to the next student.
The first player to get rid of all their dominoes is the winner.
The remaining players continue putting down their dominoes until all the dominoes have
been placed correctly to form a shopping dialogue.
Check each group has placed their dominoes correctly by asking them to read the
conversation. If the students haven’t matched the dominoes correctly, they should look for
the mistake.
