STYLE and Language​: Using examples from the book, e​xplain the following: word choices, dialogue,
rhythm, rhyme and sentence length. Also, explain unexpected insights or interesting information the reader
learns from the story. Give examples.
The word choice in the book is semi-simple because its straightforward yet isn’t overly
simplified that a child wouldn’t be able to benefit from it as far as advancing their vocabulary
and comprehension. The sentence length varies throughout the book but is moderate as it
has more than three sentences but its creating paragraph on paragraph per page.

CHARACTER – With examples from the book give the following: ​Who is the main character? Explain the
character’s personality traits.
How can the reader relate to the character, become involved in the story?
Who are the supporting characters?
The main character is a young Rosa Parks. Rosa is optimistic, brave and adventurous yet is in
tune with her and her families reality about the Jim Crow laws. The reader can relate to Rosa
because she is a young child that believes everyone deserves respect yet isn’t given any due
to the color of her skin. The supporting characters are her family, teachers, and husband.

1. PLOT: ​summarize the major events in the story-

The book begins with Rosa being pushed by a white boy and her pushing him back stating she
didn’t want to be pushed as she wasn’t bothering him. The book goes on by Rosa’s mom
explaining the laws that were set that cause people to be mean and disrespectful towards
people of color. The story continues with a sort of biography of young Rosa’s life leading up
to the time she didn’t stand up in the bus.

Setting: ​The book setting changes but the main setting is school and time starts in the 1920s
Theme: ​The theme of the book is to stand up for what you believe is right.

Line: ​The lines in the illustrations are curved giving the effect of life like imagines.

Color ​The color of the book is warm neutral fall colors such as greens and blues.
Texture ​Texture in the book is smooth due to the media choice.

illustration on page 6 sets the setting and give some detail of what the text
provides such as the farm on which Rosa and her family live on.

page six and seven the illustration of the book takes up the
whole two pages and the text is centered in the second page. There is no white space or dark

fishing is a great way to explain past events in the matter that it follow Rosa life from a young
child in the 1920s to the 1940s. The book provides a year timeline allowing children to have a
timeframe of the occurrences in the book.

Using examples from the book, explain how the book fits the emotional development of the age:
The book best present the self-conscious emotions in the first page where Rosa is pushed
down by a boy as she is walking. Rosa explains to her mom that the boy shouldn’t have
pushed her as she wasn't’ bothering him. Another example, of Rosa being aware of her
emotions is when she has to leave school to help care for her grandmother, Rosa explains
that her family is important but still feels sad of having to leave school.

I really likes this book as it provides a historical time and event in a matter that young
children can relate to. The book is simple yet provides some challenge of which would help a
child advance their vocabulary and comprehension.
