An Ergonomic Study on the Ideal Interior of Jeepneys Based

On Anthropometric Measurements of Filipinos

2017

I. INTRODUCTION

Jeepneys are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. However,
since it is considered one of the insignias of Philippine culture, aesthetics have been the main
focus of the design while functionality of its interior is nearly neglected upon creation. It clearly
shows that there is a variation in the jeepney interior design which may not benefit the comfort,
safety and well-being of its passengers. It is important to ensure comfort and safety of passenger
that is why it is necessary to make adjustments on the design of ideal interior of the jeepney.
(Baluyot, Cuenca, Custodio, & Jazmines, 2017)

This research is important because it aims to develop an ideal design of jeepney interior
based on the anthropometric measurements of Filipinos aged 18 to 64, who are the majority user
of the jeepney.

The study shows that the current design of jeepneys in the country is not actually
standardized and fit for the physique of its most frequent passengers in the Philippines. It is also
revealed that most jeepney manufacturing firms have varied specifications with regard to the
capacity, dimensions and weight of the vehicle and similar specification on the parts and
equipment of the jeepney vehicle. To address the knowledge about the common problems
mentioned and to ensure comfort and safety of passengers, necessary adjustments have been
made to design the ideal interior of the jeepney based on anthropometric measurements.

The study wants to prove the need for improving the current design of one of the country’s
main mode of transportation. With its big role in the transportation system of the Philippines, the
Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory
Board (LTFRB) have set national standards for assembly of jeepneys and other similar vehicles.
(Baluyot, et. al, 2017) Thus, the end goal of this work is to evaluate the interior design if it shows
the standards set by the Philippine government.
II. OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the study is to develop an ideal interior design of the jeepney based on
the body measurements of Filipinos that will benefit the comfort, safety, and well-being of the
passengers.

Specific Objectives Justification

To choose the primary subjects of the study It is necessary to do this object to prevent bias
and to determine the primary subjects of the
study. Also, Figure 1 shows the number of
respondents by age.
To identify and analyze the main problems Table 1 shows the primary concerns experience

All of the figures and tables in the study are clear except for Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4.
These figures require an amount of effort to read them. The researchers should have provided
more illustrations that are easy to read like Figure 1 below.

IV. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Data collected from the survey suggest that the main problems encountered by jeepney
passengers concern the way the dimension of components fit their physique. Table 1 shows the
primary concerns experienced by the respondents. It is legible and the font size is large enough.
The label that says “Part” indicates which part of the jeepney is being referred to. The label of
“Primary Concern” can be indicated qualitatively by the respondents, the choices were given by
researchers. The label “Concerns” indicates the number of respondents in percentage that had
concerns with the specific parts given.
The front view (Figure 2), top view (Figure 3), and cross-sectional view (Figure 4) of the design
created based on anthropometric measurements are shown below. Figures 2, 3, and 4 are not
legible. The measurements in all figures are difficult to read. The researchers should have
provided clearer and more legible figures so that the readers could understand the measurements
that were placed from the specific parts. In our opinion, the researchers should have used a more
3D approach for the interior design of the jeepney. Using an application like AutoCAD can bring
more detail to the design of the interior.
The structure of the presentation of the research is logical since it requires the previous
objective to be accomplished first before proceeding to the next. Although this structure of the
research does not compare the current dimensions of the jeepney in order to identify the
discrepancies of the dimensions. The results was discussed well that it addressed the research
objectives and the presentation and discussion of the results lead to the conclusions easily. The
major findings of the study was not discussed in the context of the end goal of the study.
